A guide to choosing the best home exercise equipment

Everyone knows how important it is to get regular exercise, but still many of us put off starting an exercise program because of the inconvenience it would cause to our busy lives.

With home exercise equipment now being so cheap and easily available it makes sense to get yourself some thing like a treadmill or an elliptical trainer to ensure that you can fit a regular exercise session into your life.

Deciding which home exercise equipment to get

There's a large range of different home exercise equipment available so it can be difficult for the uninitiated to choice which is best for them. A the end of the day you need to choose the exercise machine which you think will do you the greatest benefit over the long term.

There's no use getting something which looks great and is currently the biggest fad gym item to own. Make sure you actually enjoy the movement involved in the exercise equipment you choose. Enjoy may actually be too strong a word to use when considering any exercise movement for many of you but to machine you choose should at least be less painful than a torture device from the middle ages.

What types of home exercise equipment are available?

Treadmill

Getting a cheap treadmill is the first choice for many people when they make a foray into the world of home exercise. Its understandable as the treadmill exercises the most basic movements of walking and running which we have been doing every day for the best part of our lives. This makes it great if you haven't done any serious exercise for years, and a good discount treadmill will grow with you as your fitness improves as they allow you to run at various incline and faster speeds. If you are short on space you will also find a variety of folding treadmills to reduce the required storage space.

Elliptical Trainers

Elliptical trainers are great if you really want to take your cardiovascular fitness to the next level. They train both upper and lower body in tandem working your muscles, heart and lungs very intensely. The elliptical trainer takes a little more getting used to than a treadmill due to the unusual movement required so I recommend you try one out before making a purchase.

Step Machine

To me the stepper is a poor mans elliptical trainer and as such is not really worth considering unless you can pick one up very cheaply. The movement always on the home models feels slightly awkward to some people and can also lead to pretty quick boredom when in use.

stationary bike

A great choice for those who find exercise routines to be the most boring things in the world. A stationary bike makes it is easier than all other forms of exercise to read a book, watch television or listen to music while taking your workout. They are also capable of providing a tough workout when you are in the mood for it.

Rowing Machine

If your looking for a cardiovascular training device that will take you closest to a true torture device then look no further than an indoor rower, or ergo as it is sometimes known. If you've got the will and the stamina one of these babies will take you to a whole new world of fitness, you'll have to endure biblical amounts of pain to get there but it will be worth it. A machine for the sadomasicist if ever there was such a thing.

Weights and machines

You'll find a range of weights and weight machines at your local fitness store or online retailer. Everyone should be doing some sort of weight baring exercise as they get older to maintain strength of the bones and reduce muscle loss. The best cardiovascular training equipment already does a bit of this for you but as you get more serious about your fitness and health you will definitely want to look into getting some weights or weight machines.

Its up to you

The exercise machine you end up with is a personal decision that no one can make for you. Try out every piece of equipment available before you make your purchase to ensure you get the home exercise equipment best suited to your own personal circumstances and fitness goals.

It actually might not be a bad idea to spend a couple of hours at your local gym where you can get a true feel for all machines such as electric treadmills and elliptical trainers to see which you like the best by doing a little workout on each one.
