So there you are having a nice quiet drink with your best friend, but he is not his normal laid back self and has obviously got something on his mind. Before he speaks you wonder what he is about to say and you do not realise the way your life will change because of the next decision you are about to be asked to make.

He says " I am getting married and as my best friend I am asking if you would be my best man"

How many times in your life do you encounter those mixed emotions at the same time of pride and fear and before you know it you reply " I would be honoured to be your best man". So there it is that life changing decision.

You could have said no, or that you would be out of the country, but you were caught up in the pride and after you say 'Yes' comes the fear. Welcome to an experience you will not forget.

The first thing that goes through your mind when you have said 'Yes' is you are going to have to give a best man toast which normally includes the speech in front of a large crowd of people.

How To Prepare For The Best Man Toast

There are several things to consider when you prepare to give the best man toast.

DO YOUR RESEARCH.
If you leave it to the last minute or try to do it 'off the cuff' it will be much less effective, unless you are very good at public speaking and even then you have to know your subject.

ITS NOT ALL ABOUT YOU.
It is very easy to think whilst you are speaking that all eyes will be on you. Most of the time they will but the audience will also be looking at the bride and groom to gauge reaction to things you say.

RELAX
Its a tough job knowing that you are going to have to get up and give a speech especially if the food is served before. There are not many who have been best man that can enjoy the meal whilst the moments ahead dominate your thoughts.

USE TRIGGER NOTES.
It is best to rehearse your speech and if possible use trigger notes, rather than read out the whole speech. You will be able to connect with your audience if you are able to look at them.

MAKE IT REAL
Use real anecdotes that people will recall and laugh about. Ensure you do not embarrass the bride or groom or the audience to much. A cheap laugh can leave things very awkward.

It goes down well to include within a toast some of the many people that have helped to make this a special day such as the parents of the couple, bridesmaids and the couple themselves. As a matter of courtesy if not mentioned in previous speeches it is nice to mention anyone who has really helped make it a great day such as catering staff,
