The Best Metronomes Out There

Ranked #838 in Music, #21,277 overall

Why You Need to Get A Good Metronome

Metronomes can be incredibly helpful in keeping you honest with the beat.

Let's face it, it's hard to focus on expressing anything when you're struggling to keep/find the beat.

While it can be incredibly frustrating to find your tempo wandering, it can equally frustrating to use a metronome!

But their benefits far outweigh their annoying qualities. Several good rehearsals with a metronome can get you playing a piece evenly for good (it's a wonder what muscle memory does for us!)

There are so many choices out there that it can be hard to decide which ones to buy. I've compiled the best metronomes here!

The Best Metronomes: The Digital Kind

Digital metronomes come in a variety of types and consequently, a variety of price ranges.

You best digital metronomes that you can get that do pretty much any beat pattern you want, not to mention the fact that you can vary loudness, type of click, how beats are subdivided, etc. Most of these metronomes also have a "red light" click so that you can have the benefit of the metronome without the annoying click (can put a damper on feelings sometimes!)

The best plain metronomes do what metronomes do best: keep the beat. They don't come with lots of bells or whistles.

So when picking the best metronomes, it's important to keep in mind what you will be using it for and to be realistic when it comes to what kind of practicing you need to do.

The Best Metronomes: The Old-Fashioned Kind

Some of the best metronomes that I have owned have been the "old-fashioned" wind-up metronomes.

Some say that they do not have a steady beat which in some cases, is true.

However, I find that the wind up metronomes has a flexibility to them that the digital ones do not.
You can see "in between" the beats since you can see the pendulum swinging and can play within that span on time. This allows more room for expression and usually results is more fulfilling practice time.

Symphony of 100 Metronomes

This is a pretty sweet video of a piece for 100 metronomes by Gyorgy Ligeti called Poeme Symphonique for 100 Metronomes.

It's definitely a "concept" piece but interesting none the less (especially since we're talking about metronomes here!)

Are metronomes really a muscians best freind?

The best metronomes usually are both loved and hated by their owners.

Classical Music Blog

This is an interesting classical music blog that I subscribe to for my RSS reader (in my gmail account).

I think that they have a nice balance of interesting facts about composers, pieces, historic facts, and musical analysis.

It's not so technical that's it's not fun to read but it's detailed enough to make you really appreciate what they are talking about.

All of the excerpts are sound recordings so you can actually hear exactly what they are referring to. If only my analytical papers for class had this!

My Peer's Favorite Metronomes

So far, you've gotten my opinion on the best metronomes.

But that's, of course, completely a matter of personal choice.

As I've gone through the school of music, I've seen lots of my peers using different metronomes that they were particularly fond of.

I've compiled the most popular ones here.

Digital, I want to be able to set a watch by my metronome

italianizeyourself says:

I like the look of the old fashioned metronomes, but they're not as portable as the digital ones. For practicality and cost effectiveness, I have to go with digital.

BritFun says:

Digital definitely. In fact - there are lots of good metronomes for the iPhone - that way you always have one with you. And they're much cheaper than a "real" one.

old-fashioned, it gives me room for expression

learn2playguitarfast says:

I like my KORG MA-30. It has a built-in tuner for every note, good volume, and is very easy to use. What I also like that you can adjust it so that it plays on certain parts of the beat. I already dropped it a couple times and it still works. I highly recommend it, for the price it's very good.

flutestar123 says:

I don't know which one I prefer. Digital is more portable, where as my old fashion one clicks louder. It's also easier to set an old fashion metronome, but it doesn't have all of the numbers. I'm going to have to go with the old fashion kind, it's the metronome I use more.

This is what your stand should look like (at least sometimes!)

I've been looking for a metronome for my son who is taking piano lessons for a while. Great recommendation and thumbs up for your helpful lens!

I have a metronome built into my piano and a small pocket one that I use for sax practice.

I'd like one of those wooden Wittners because there was always one of those on top of the piano when I was a child.

    Great lens

I know you like iPhones and Metronomes - there are lots of good metronomes out for the iPhone - and they don't cost that much. Still looking for one that speeds up though - there's a Mac metronome application that does that - it's a cool practice feature to help you get a piece up to speed.
