Seth Godin On Being An Entrepreneur Vs. Being A Freelancer And How Marketing Has Changed

This afternoon I listened and watched Seth Godin speak on Jelly Talks. This was the first time I have listened to Seth and also my first experience with Jelly Talks.

I have to say my first impression of Seth was formed a few months ago when I discovered Squidoo, but today he further gained my respect as a blogger, a marketer, and a teacher. The short amount of time I spent listening to him today had a significant effect on me and my future goals. Seth Godin has a unique way of entertaining, educating, and inspiring others to succeed. His appearance on Jelly Talk today did all three of these things for me, and I can't wait to read more and hear more from him.

I'd like to share the highlights of his appearance today through tweets that were tweeted during his appearance by others who were equally impressed with Seth Godin and his marketing concepts. I hope you are as inspired as I am once you read the tweets of his most memorable statements made today on Jelly Talk.

Who Is Seth Godin?

What can Seth Godin teach you?

If you google the term "Seth Godin" you will come up with 1,710,000 listings in goolge. Can anyone say wowza?! You would think that everyone would know who Seth is, but unfortunately, it isn't so. My very own husband had no idea who Seth Godin is. (Perhaps he should pay more attention to me huh?)

Seth has been called a "Marketing God" more times than I care to count, and although I'm a huge fan of his, I refuse to refer to him as any sort of God even though it is a unique play on his name and talents. The reason I brought the name up is to simply demonstrate how revered and respected he is throughout the marketing and internet worlds.

Seth Godin is a marketer, entrepreneur,an author, a teacher, a blogger, a charity giver, a role model, an inspiration and much, much more. Seth Godin has a unique ability to see into the future and then use that vision to create something unique and useful and deliver it to us, the public, in a way that never feels like he's shoving his vision down our throats. (Ok, so maybe he can't see into the future, but the rest of it is true.)

Seth Godin knows who he is. He knows what his strengths are. He knows what he wants. Seth has made his world into what he wants, but he's took the time out to give to charity and to give us the knowledge and tools to do what he has done for himself. He's a beacon of light that shines throughout the marketing community when there are so many shady characters around.

Thank you Seth for being you and thank you for Squidoo. (Did I mention he is the founder of Squidoo?)

What Is Jelly Talks?

No it is not the stuff you put on your toast

"JellyTalks is a collaboration between Jelly and the Yahoo! Developer Network to share new ideas and have interesting conversations.", according to the Jelly Talks homepage.

Jelly is a casual co working group who's members get together once a week at different locations throughout the world to work with one another. A Jelly is a way to get interaction with others while you are working solo most of the time. It's a way to bounce ideas off of one another and interact without the stuffiness of an office environment. In my opinion Jelly is an ingenious idea.

Jelly Talks is where interesting people are invited to speak on camera for 30-45 minutes and at the end of the talk viewers have a chance to ask questions via twitter. Jelly Talks is a wonderful blend of several different types of media. This cross-media concept is one that is here to stay for many years to come. I have held this opinion for some time, but it was concreted today during my first experience with Jelly Talks.

What Is Twitter?

Twitter is only one of my favorite forms of social media. On Twitter people send 140 character messages to one another, these messages are called tweets. These tweets are used to answer the question "What are you doing?", but often twitter is used to communicate with friends and market your blogs and products to followers. Twitter is easy to use and a practical way for me to touch base with friends, promote my lenses along with other people's lenses, and keep up with blogs and other people I find interesting. If you have yet to try twitter, it is worth a try.

Seth Godin Advice On Blogging

How Seth Godin changed my blogging goals instantly

During the Jelly Talk session today, Seth Godin made a huge impact on me as a beginning blogger. Blogging for me has been a love-hate relationship, and although I'm completely addicted to it, it hasn't been very rewarding or successful for me yet. Seth made the comment that each day he makes one post and with that one daily post he tries to "wrap up a small gift every day and give it to people". Wow, what a terrific concept! What if everyone approached blogging like this?

After hearing this statement I was left with an answer to a nagging question, "Do I delete my current blogs and go a different route?" I decided to combine my blogs and concentrate on one rather than spread myself so thin, and to also try to give more to my readers. I don't feel a niche blog is for me, but rather one blog that represents my brand, me, better and more fully. I don't think I should spread all of my interests over several blogs, but rather concentrate them and put more into each post, each gift to my readers.

Seth Godin On Shipping

Inspiration when I need it.

"People who ship are winning, people who don't ship are stuck. Successes ship before they are ready.", was another statement that really made an impact on me. I am going to use blogging as and example of this practice.

Bloggers who blog in regular increments are more successful than those who are not on time. If you don't ship your product (write a blog post), what are you accomplishing? I am bad about putting off publishing a post because something is just not perfect and because of this my readers are left hanging with no clear way to know when to expect a post. I am delaying shipping because I'm not ready, but I am also keeping success at bay.

Is it better to keep a blog post hidden because of imperfection or is it better to ship prematurely and allow readers a chance to read my post? Not every post will be perfect, but regular posting will improve both quality, because of practice, and readers because of regular posting (shipping). I think I need to take this to heart and stop letting the perfectionist within hold me back.

Seth Godin Says Make Your Grandparents Uncomfortable

No Seth has nothing against grandma

"I hope you're all doing something that makes your grandparents uncomfortable." is a statement declared by Seth Godin today. Seth is not advocating giving your granny a wedgie or making her watch South Park, he is saying that if you're not using a marketing strategy that isn't new to your granny, then you are probably not doing anything that will help you become successful. Marketing is an ever-changing, competitive field, and if you're not willing to change constantly, then you are not going to enjoy success.
