Hotest Trend Tweets Are Pointless On Twitter

Pear Analytics, a San Antonio products and services firm, specializing in marketing analytics completed a study on Twitter. August 2009, they wanted to know - What are people really using Twitter for?

Twitter has changed their homepage opening question from - "What are you doing?" to "Share and discover what's happening right now, anywhere in the world."

Join In The Conversation

Tweeting

Twitter prompts users to "Join the conversation".

Pear Analytics asked themselves - "Is that really what Twitter users are really tweeting about? "Is it full of meaningful conversation, or senseless babble?"

Pear Analytics set out to prove that Twitter was really being used for self-promotion. All the tweets are trying to sell a product, service or have some kind of an offer.

How The Study Was Conducted

A Random Sample

Pear took a random sample of tweets for two weeks every 30 minutes for a total of ten days. The samples were taken from 11:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday and only in English.

The tweets were categorized and each tweet was placed in one category - news, spam, self-promotion, pointless babble, conversational or pass along value.

Results Of The Study

Not What Was Expected

The results of the study wasn't what Pear had anticipated. They thought Spam and Self Promotion would be much higher. And didn't expect the News category to be dead last. Self Promotion was a lot less than they had expected, 5.85%.

When Were Tweets Tweeted?

Interesting

Pear Analytics found it interesting that the Pass Along Value tweets were more common at 11:30am CST and again between 4:00 and 4:30pm CST.

Tweets by Day of Week

For Each Category

Pear Analytics highlighted the highest amount of tweets for each category and on which day of the week.

What Do You Think Of All This?

Everyone Can Have Their Voice Heard

I was coming to that conclusion myself but I do find that quite a few people respond to me when I ask if anyone is listening. I have had several people join Squidoo after reading my Tweets and I have found some very interesting Websites because of the Tweets I receive.

Funny. I looked at this long and hard. I am a reluctant and very occasional tweeter, and don't know 99 percent of my followers. I just can't keep up. I feel less guilty now, thanks!

Exactly why I don't hang out on twitter that much anymore! All I see are peers promoting their own businesses -- quite like preaching to the choir. I use my personal account for staying in touch with real-life friends but that's about it. (: Great lens as always.

Interesting lens and not a surprising outcome, really. Speaking for myself, I've made some good, real-life friends starting on Twitter and eventually leading to real-life get-togethers. I try to vary what I tweet about, from news, to interesting links (that aren't my own), to, yes, my own stuff and, of course, my own pointless babble. It's all good! (Except for the really spammy stuff that people keep repeating but never interact with anyone.)

So. Lani, is your name pronounced Lane - ee? Or Lan - ee? Or, other?

Cool stats! But mostly what I expected... :) Well done Lani - this is great lens!

    Interesting report! I've been wondering...

I use Twitter - but following the trends is pointless. Nobody has a fast enough computer to even check if their own tweet has registered, let alone have an exchange of views. I have one follower who relentless self promotes one blog - she even retweets herself. Most of them are fun though, albeit pontless :P 5*

Interesting report Lani and well done in presenting it - I haven't used Twitter much...hmmm...I guess I haven't had much time for "pointless babble"? ;)

Hoorah for pointless babble!! Great lens, Lani :D
I use twitter as a substitute for googlereader- quick links to find people's blogposts. I wouldn't be without it :)
