Look for one approved by AAFCO (American Association of Feed Control Officials) for ALL stages of life, both puppy and adult. And read the labels. Make sure it has whole food ingredients.

The main no no's to stay away from though are corn, wheat, wheat gluten, soy and dairy. These have been known to cause allergies in dogs and are generally only used because they are a cheap filler.
