Leap The Dips

The world's oldest working coaster

Leap The Dips was built in 1902 by Edward Joy Morris in Lakemont Park in Altoona, PA. It is the only side-friction coaster left in North America. It stands 41 feet high and is 1452 feet long. It is a figure 8 style that goes a whopping 10 miles per hour. It's largest dip is 9 feet high and it runs for 1 minute.

Son of Beast

The Tallest and Fastest Wooden Coaster

Son of Beast opened in 2000 at King's Island in Ohio. It took the height and speed records from it's predecessor, The Beast, but is still 2nd to it's length at 7,032 feet. It stands 218 ft tall and can hit 4.5 g-force. Son of Beast was the first coaster to successfully incorporate a vertical loop in the ride but it was shut down due to a structural failure where 27 people were injured. The ride opened up again in 2007 without the loop. It cost an estimated $20 million to build.

Kingda Ka

The daddy of all coasters

Kingda Ka was built at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey in 2005. It became the tallest and fastest coaster in the world with a height of 456 feet. It has a hydraulic launch mechanism that allows it to push off to a speed of up to 128 mph in 3.5 seconds! The tower of the ride has 3 safety strobe lights affixed to it just in case a low flying plane comes by. Althought the ride is only 28 seconds long, the 4-5 gs you experience during the 418 ft drop more than make up for it.

The Corkscrew

First coaster with 3 loops

The Corkscrew is also in Cedar Point Park in Ohio. It was built in 1976 and was the first roller coaster with 3 inversions. This coaster is 2,050 ft long and gets up to 48 mph during it's 1 min 40 sec duration. It has a red, white, and blue theme because it opened on our country's bicentennial.

Gemini

A Racing Coaster

Gemini opened at Cedar Park in Sandusky, Ohio in 1978. It is a racing rollercoaster that has 2 trains, red and blue. The trains race to the finish on a steel track supported by wood. While it is discouraged by the park, passengers on opposite cars are known to high-five as they pass by each other on curves. It stands 125.3 feet high and is 3,935 feet long. Gemini can get up to 60 miles per hour but it's always up in the air as to which train will win.

X2

Formerly X

X2 opened in 2008 at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. It is the world's first 4th dimension roller coaster. What makes it so unique is that the seats can rotate 360 degrees forwards and backwards in a controlled spin in a rack and pinion gear mechanism. The ride is 175 feet high and 3610 feet long with 2 inversions and lasts a nauseating 2 minutes.
