Best Running Music for a Marathon

Running to music with too slow of a pace can cause you to subconsciously slow down to the beat. Having the right beats per minute (bpm) for your running music can improve your performance. I am not a runner, but I have spent a lot of time making running playlists for my wife who has run many marathons. In doing so, I became aware of the importance of the bpm of a song and how it relates to your running pace. Many people like to run to "Eye of the Tiger", but at 109 bpm, it is way too slow. If you run to music that is too slow, you can subconsciously slow down to the beat of the song. There have also been several scientific studies done that show that having the "right" music actually improves your perfromance. The other issue with many of the running playlists out there is that the lyrics are just not motivational. I see running playlists w/ "Blister in the Sun" or "19th Nervous Breakdown" and while they might have good bpms, it just doesn't seem like what you want for running music in the middle of 26.2 miles.

So here are a list of sites that combine good music, bpm, and motivational songs:

Bold Pace Music

great music, arranged by BPM, inspirational songs, longer for marathon

Full Disclosure: I created these playlists. So of course I'm listing first :) I researched these songs carefully and every song is either fun, motivational, or specific to running. They are also 2 - 3 hours long to cover most of a marathon. Additionally, they start w/ slower BPM and then build to faster songs as it gets to the end. They are eclectic mixes of alternative/progressive rock, classic rock, indie music, some R&B/hip hop and 80's power-pop. There are bands like the Clash, Stones, Gorillaz, the Police, Killers, Kooks, White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, OutKast, Vampire Weekend, Doors, the Smiths, XTC, etc.

How: Download via link to itunes or amazon

Cost: $40 - $60 for entire 2 - 4 hour playlist or $.99 - $1.29 per song

  • Hella Sound Running Music

original song mixes, several beat options, consistent BPM

There are currently two running playlist options. One is Indie rock, Funk, and Jazz and the other is more intense, face-punching trash, metal, rock with a little ska. You have the ability to choose your BPM when you download the songs (ie. 140, 145, 150, 155, 160, 165, 170, 175, 180, 185 BPM). The tempo is consistent throughout the song so it's great for long runs. It's original music played w/ real instruments, not a typical techno remix track. Hella Sound also does some great blog posts w/ "Listening Parties" that have an online discussion about new music.

How: Download directly on Hella Sound's site

Cost: $5 per 30 minute release

Artist profiles, variety of music, celebrity playlists

They'll probably have a wireless MP3 device implanted into the shoes soon, but until then, they do a nice job w/ playlists, artist profiles and celebrity music choices. See Kara Goucher's workout playlist along with songs from Lance Armstrong.

How: Download with link from itunes

    Cost: $8 - $12 per playlist or $.99 - $1.29 per song

I really dig the lens, I like listening to group ex. music, it usually hovers around 140 bpm, that or I use a tempo increase app on my phone to change it!

For me, all it took was just doing listening to music the first time and noticing how effortlessly and inspired my runnnig became, I could run longer and harder and didn't notice any of the normal discomforts or strain. It's amazing and therapeutic.

Hustlin' by Rick Ross always gets my blood pumping, especially if it comes anytime after mile 13 when the fatigue is kicking in. Although, in a marathon race I run with no music, I use music for my training runs.

I use pink floyd dark side of the moon for tempo runs because it gradually picks up tempo throughout.
