Many people take up juicing to improve their health and vitality. It's a great way to get more natural, nutrient rich foods into your diet and increase your fruit and vegetable intake. But where to start?
Juicers come in three main types. Centrifugal juicers use spinning knife blades and a central basket. They are fast and powerful but sometimes more wasteful, leaving wetter pulp than their masticulating counterparts. Masticulating juicers use grinding gears and are slower but usually more thorough. Masticulating juicers can be manual or electric and are generally better suited for wheatgrass juicing than other types. A citrus juicer is specially shaped for its purpose.
When I started shopping for my juicing machine, I knew I wanted to juice a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, but hopefully without the hassles of my mom's old juicer we used growing up. The opening for the feed tube on that juicer was small and it was difficult to clean.

My All Time Favorite Juicer
The Breville Compact Juice Fountain is highly recommended as fast, powerful, and easy to clean. Other owners in their reviews have said it's so powerful you'll want to be mindful of keeping the feed tube covered; otherwise you may get fruit on the ceiling. I haven't had that problem, but it is a powerful machine, no question about it. The company reports that the motor operates at 14,000 RPM, producing 8 ounces of juice in 5 seconds and juices 1.5 quarts before it needs to be emptied.
Unlike many juicers, you do not need a tool to remove the basket for cleaning. Breville uses excellent, consumer-thoughtful design; even the electric plug is designed to be easy to unplug.
I loved the sounds of this, especially the ability to juice an entire apple at once and the ease in cleaning. Compact sounded great for my small kitchen, too. So this was the juicer I ordered.
I love it. It was simple to set up out of the box. Just a few pieces to fit together, no tools needed. It really is a cinch to take back apart and clean, too. We're using it daily and most of the parts rinse right off. Only the mesh filter needs any scrubbing, and that doesn't take much.
Don't be deceived by the word "Compact" - they give you a lot of machine. Its footprint is about the size of a gallon of milk, so it is small-er, but it packs a lot of power in that space.
The booklet that comes with it has some great recipes to start you off, whether you're looking for healthy juices or mixed drinks.
