Is there such as a thing as a "best toothbrush"?
What do you define as "best"? Best for dental care and oral hygiene, best for eco friendliness, best for your kids, best for ease of use? What about all of these combined? What about a wooden toothbrush? Read on...
The best toothbrush
Use it without a guilty conscience
Have you ever thought about what plastic toothbrushes do to our environment? No, of course not. Neither have I. Until recently.A toothbrush is - well, just that. You use it and then you dispose of it. Every 3 months if you follow your dentist's advice.
We throw away millions of plastic toothbrushes every year and they all end up in landfill sites where they takes 100 years to decompose. Now, millions of toothbrushes make a mountain of plastic. Plastic that we don't want to see in our landfill sites. Plastic that is made using up our precious oil resources which we need to produce medicines. For example.
But what can I do, I hear you ask. I need to brush my teeth, otherwise THEY start to rot and fall out.
In comes the wooden toothbrush. Eco friendly and kids love it too. Made by a small family enterprise in Germany (the land of eco friendly gadgets), the wooden toothbrush is made from sustainable wood and has natural bristles. Brace yourself - they are made from sterilized pigs' hair. Yuk! I hear you say. Not so - I say. The pigs hair is taken from live animals which are shaved and then the hair is washed and sterilized. This is an age old tradition i.e. early toothbrushes where made like that. After we got rid of the obligatory twig that did nigh on nothing for our oral health (that of our ancestors' that is).
The best toothbrush is a wooden toothbrush. Because it is made from eco friendly stuff and you can shred it and put it on the compost after its lifespan is over. Or just throw it onto your log fire. No plastics in landfill sites, no nasty chemicals (the wooden handle is oiled with vegetable oils) and no bad conscience. It's medium hard bristles clean your teeth perfectly and keep your gums healthy.
Just one thing: you need to leave it to dry off thouroughly - don't leave it standing in a puddle of water at the bottom of your water glass.
A small price to pay to save our environment, don't you think?
