Your Guide to Breaking Into the Field of Videogame Testers

Getting paid to do something we love and would normally do anyway is probably the best motivator for people to get up and go to their jobs. But let's face it, it's very hard to find something that you both love to do and that will make you a decent living. Luckily, videogame testers have found the perfect thing- and that is, of course, testing videogames! But getting into the industry is just like anything else- it's more "Who you know" than "What you know", but this lens will give you a heads up on some of the best resources to use when trying to get into the video game testers arena.

Another website that may be helpful to you, in case this lens isn't enough, is a website run by a guy in the video game industry himself; check it out at Get Paid to Play Games

Only 4 Gamers

A Resource That Will Get You Paid

The first videogame tester resource you'll learn about is a fairly good resource, but I much prefer resources we'll cover later. Only 4 Gamers gives you a step by step guide to breaking into the industry via video game tester jobs. They take a methodical approach that you would expect from someone teaching medicine or law, and yet it's still easy to follow the step by step process. I think the best part about Only 4 Gamers, however, are the follow up emails they give to you, making sure you get the latest updates on the video game tester world.

Despite all of this, Only 4 Gamers has a few flaws in the way of its execution. There could have been more information given up front, and a better resources page could have been provided.

Overall, Only 4 Gamers deserves an 8/10!

Game Tester Guide

Start Your Career as a Videogame Beta Tester!

Richard West, the creator of Game Tester Guide, is a truly inspirational guy- he has taken his successful videogame beta tester background (he's been in the industry for 4 years), went back through all of his past experiences with getting and maintaining good jobs, and now has written everything he knows about the process in a very easy to read guide. What more could you ask for?!

I like Richard's guide because he explains the "why" behind many questions- like "Why can't I find jobs on my own?" or "Why do I need you?" the answer would be because most testers are only given a shot if they have prior experience in the industry (I.E., started as a programmer or designer), or if they play things right in their resume and interview phases. If you have no prior experience, then you will need a guide like West's which explains how to "walk the walk" and "talk the talk" so to speak.

The downsides to the system are few and far between- really I think the only problem is West's tendency to focus on off line videogame testing opportunities, when there are plenty of online ones as well.

Still, it's a great resource that deserves a 9/10!
