My aunt taught me this trick: try to get a hold of a cd or mp3 course like a podcast and just before bed start listening to mandarin Chinese. Listening to a language while sleeping is supposed to help with retention purportedly. It worked for me!

Learn the simple Chinese characters first because they give hints to all the more complex Chinese characters known as "radicals." Most characters are made of component parts and always practice pronunciation!

- great tips. hahaa! i studied mandarin for 2 years. it wasn't easy but it was worth it when i went to China to volunteer at a panda preserve and i could communicate and order food!

- Those are good tips! I agree with, Tony, though. You must know what kind of learner you are. I have been studying the Theory of Multiple Intelligences and have come up with different ways to study Chinese depending on which kind of learner you are.
I tend be more of a visual learner. What kind of learner are you?
