Beta Fish Swollen Eye
A common bacterial infection that afflicts beta fish, swollen eye syndrome, also commonly known as "pop-eye", can be a symptom of a more serious internal problem.

Let's take a look at what exactly what causes beta fish swollen eye problems to occur.
Causes of Beta Fish Swollen Eye Problems
Basically, it is caused by the accumulation of fluid either in the eye or behind the eye, in the socket, which cause the eye to bulge out. Among the many causes of beta fish swollen eye include:
- Bacterial infections
- Viruses
- Parasites
- Water nitrogen supersaturation (gas bubble disease)
- Poor water quality
- Tumors
- Internal (metabolic) disorders
- Nutritional deficiencies
Beta Fish Swollen Eye Could Be A Symptom Of A Bigger Problem
So beta fish swollen eye is not a problem in and of itself, but rather, is a symptom of some other underlying problem. So then, the next question that logically follows is: How can you determine what exactly is causing the problem? What is ailing your beta fish?
How To Treat Beta Fish Swollen Eye
The first things you must do to treat beta fish swollen eye should include:
- Isolate your fish if it is in a community tank.
- Thoroughly clean out your fish's tank, replace the plants and rocks if they are deteriorating.
- Raise the water temperature to a constant 82 degrees. This helps your fish's immune system.
- You can try giving your fish antibiotics. Two you can try include Kanacyn by Aquatronics and Maracyn 2 by Mardel.
- Make sure you are using a good quality aquarium salt as this helps "wash" the eyes.
Failure To Treat Beta Fish Swollen Eye Can Cause Serious Problems
Fortunately, beta fish swollen eye is curable with a little bit of effort, within a few days. But it is extremely important that you act fast. The worst thing you can do is wait. Don't make the mistake of simply "waiting it out" to see if the problem goes away by itself. If you see obvious signs of a swollen eye, make sure you take action right away.
If left untreated, your beta fish could go blind in the affected eye. Worse yet, the infected eye could bulge out to the point where it literally falls out of its socket completely! That sounds really gross, but it is true. It can and does happen!
