So Your Beta Fish Won't Eat?

So your beta fish won't eat?

If you find yourself placing food in the fish tank and your beta is just ignoring it and not eating, then it may be a sign of a potential health problem which your beta fish might be facing.

So it is in your best interests to take whatever proactive measures are necessary to identify, detect, and correct the problem at this early stage, before it might potentially get out of hand and get worse.

Under normal circumstances, beta fish will just eat, and eat, and eat, and eat some more, indiscriminately. If left to their own devices, fish could theoretically keep on eating whenever they encounter food, and could overeat, and in some worst case scenarios, even "eat themselves to death".

So what does it mean when your fish won't eat? It typically means that something is wrong. Your fish may be uncomfortable due to variations in water temperature. (My beta fish usually refuses to eat right after a water change if the temperature of the new water is different than the old water.)

On a more serious note, it could be a symptom of an infection.

Illnesses In Which Your Beta Fish Won't Eat

Below are some of the most common illnesses of which one of the poignant symptoms is that your beta fish won't eat:

  • Fungal infection - If your fish has developed patches of white on its body and head, and your fish is generally inactive, mostly resting at the bottom of the tank, and barely ever eating anything or showing any interest in food at all, then your fish may have a fungal infection.
  • Rotting tail / rotting fin - If your fish's fins or tail show signs of deterioration and your fish's overall body has lost its luster and is paling, coupled with loss of appetite, then you may have sick fish on your hands.
  • Ick - Beta fish are carnivorous and love to eat live foods straight out of the tropical ocean waters. The problem arises when you feed them frozen foods such as blood worms, that may still have live parasites thriving within them. These parasites can infect the beta fish and cause it to break out with itchy dots all over the its body, head, and even the eyes. If your fish is darting about frantically trying to scratch itself against plants or rocks, while just not paying attention to its food, then you may have to treat your beta fish for parasites.
  • Popeye - No, we're not talking about the spinach-eating sailorman. We are talking about a bulging of the fish's eyeballs out of its sockets, which is typically due to bacterial infection, caused by dirty water. Popeye is generally a symptom of a more serious problem, such as tuberculosis. (Yes, fish can develop tuberculosis too. It doesn't only just infect humans.) Your fish may not have much of an appetite and thus, quite obviously, your beta won't eat.
  • Dropsy - If your fish's scales are standing on end, making your beta look more like a pine cone than a beta, then your fish has been infected by bacteria which is transmitted typically through the consumption of live worms. It is very likely that your beta won't eat under these circumstances.
