My Vegetable Gardening Experiences

I have had a vegetable garden every year for as long as I can remember.  I love to grow and eat my home grown veggies.  Let me share some of my experiences with you and maybe convert you to becoming a vegetable gardener, too. Now I know gardening isn't for everyone, but if I can convert just one of you, I'll consider it a success. Gardening does entail work, but a lot of it is done on 'autopilot'.

I Grow Vegetables

I have my vegetable garden to sustain my physical life and my flower garden for my psychological life.

I am growing tomatoes, sweet bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, and sweet banana peppers this year. The plants I bought at Lowe's already had tomatoes and peppers on them. They obviously were last year's plants. So far they are thriving with regular watering and feeding with MiracleGro. I have moved back to Florida and gardening here can be a real challenge. We are behind on rainfall all ready this year and it's only March.

I Grow Flowers, Too

Many Attract Hummingbirds

I try to plant flowers that are red, orange, yellow, and purple. These colors attract hummingbirds and some butterflies. This year I have only seen 1 hummingbirds. They are so adorable, but if you're not paying attention, you could miss them.

I am hoping more come soon. I have a hummingbird feeder that I keep filled with sugar water. I change it every week so it's fresh. I use a 4:1 ration of water to sugar for the nectar.

Canning and Gardening

Go Hand in Hand

So what do you do with all those vegetables you just harvested from your garden. You have three choices. You can eat them. Usually there are too many to eat all of them. You can freeze them or you can can them. I have done freezing, but I prefer canning. I didn't really get into it much until about 3 years ago when the garden produced so well. I had to do something. I couldn't let them go to waste. So I canned. I thought it would be hard, but it really wasn't. It takes time and is hot work, but not hard. Up until 3 years ago, I mainly put up jams and jellies.

Canning Vs. Freezing

I don't really have a preference of frozen or canned. I do both. What about you?

The only vegetable I prefer canned over frozen is the green bean. I think they are somewhat rubbery to chew when they are frozen.

Do frozen vegetables taste fresher than home-canned?

Absolutely! The color is more vibrant, too!

No Way! They taste just as fresh when home-canned!

I haven't had canned veggies, so I had to say no.

We don't can - perhaps we should give it a try.

Yes, we are veggie and grow most of our own stuff - we use organic and biodynamic methods.

No place for a garden right now...maybe down the road. I've always wanted to have a vegetable garden.

I used to have quite a big garden but now am without one. I often dream I have a garden again, so I guess I miss it. A community garden sounds like a good idea for people like me.

Oh My Goodness!! What a darling idea "Community Gardening!" Im have never even thought of such a thing. I am a city/concrete jungle dweller, as well as a newbie to squidoo. But, my sister has a green thumb and there is a bit of landspace I believe at her first and last husband's place. I'll run it passed her. Thanks so much. What a beautifully built and charming lens.

A community garden is so much fun. I have my own veggie garden but I'm also involved in a group veggie garden which produces veggies for a charity cafe. Have you planted those Brussel sprouts yet?
