Betsi Goutal

Hello, I'm Betsi Goutal. To the best of my knowledge, I'm the ONLY Betsi Goutal on the planet, alive or dead. This is because Betsi is an uncommon spelling of an rather uncommon diminutive (aka nickname) for Elizabeth. There are other Elizabeth Goutals, though I'm pretty sure I'm the only American Elizabeth Goutal. I never go by Elizabeth though; from the time I was little my parents called me Betsy and by the time I was in seventh grade I started spelling my name with and "i" on the end - so that's me, Betsi Goutal, the one and only.

But enough about names -- who am I? Well, no one can simply define themselves in just a few short sentences, but I'll do my best to sum up. I'm an artist; I work mainly in mixed media and most often work in altered books, journals, and artist trading cards. I run an Etsy shop called Eccentricity Supply Co where I sell eclectic supplies for altered art and other arts and craft needs. I'm smart and geeky, but I can be shy and awkward (in part due to Seasonal Affective Disorder and Asperger's Syndrome). I'm in my late 20s but I still dye my hair bright colors on a regular basis. And I like to write articles on Squidoo (that's the site you're on right now!)

The Art of Betsi Goutal

mixed media, altered art, visual journals, artist trading cards, and so much more

As I mentioned before, my artwork tends towards mixed media. Mixed media is essentially just what it sounds like - take a bunch of "stuff" and throw it at your surface and see what sticks! More seriously speaking, I favor a mix of acrylic paint, paper collage, rubber stamping, and the written word to express myself.

One of my favorite forms of artistic expression is my visual journal. Think of it as a diary for right-brained folks. My first visual journal was an altered book with paint, magazine clippings, stamps, and my own personal writings covering the original pages of the book. Clicking the image to the right will bring you to my Flickr set with some of my favorite pages from my visual journals.

I'm also an avid creator and collector of ATCs, also known as artist trading cards. ATCs are 2.5" x 3.5" tiny pieces or art that you create and trade with other artists like you might with sports cards. I've been a member of my local group, New England ATCs, since 2007. I also trade online on SwapBot and, less often, on AtcsForAll.

Selling vintage game cards and other found objects for altered art and mixed media projects

My shop, EccentricitySupplyCo, is the natural progression of my artistic life. Always the magpie, I'm forever finding interesting bits and bobs to use in my mixed media artworks and the rate at which I find it - something I think it finds me! - tends to exceed my ability to use it by a wide margin.

Life With Disabilities

Living with an invisible illness can make you feel like it's YOU that's invisible

Yeah, pretty much... :)

Throughout my life, I've dealt with a number of disabilities, all of them being what it classed as "invisible illness" or sometimes "invisible disability."

Firstly, I have Asperger's Disorder (also known as Asperger's Syndrome). Asperger's is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder, a more high-functioning one than what many people think of when they hear the word "autism". Though thanks to major media like Grey's Anatomy featuring characters with Asperger's, it's becoming more well-known and to a certain extent better understood.

I've also battled with depression throughout my life. Some of it has been due to traumatic events such as the death of my cousin when I was nine, or more recently the death of my father. To a large degree though, my depression is distinctly seasonal in nature, and I'm one of the most hypersensitive individuals with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) I've ever heard of. This is probably in part because I'm an introverted, geeky, homebody type and quite frankly I don't get out of the house enough. Particularly when I am lax in my therapies, I can suffer fairly badly from a string of exceedingly cloudy days - which unfortunately is all too common in New England. Thankfully, I've learned what therapies work for me to lessen my symptoms and so it no longer cripples my day-to-day life. It's still a struggle, but it's a battle I feel like I'm winning.

My Life With Asperger's

More info about Asperger's Syndrom and how it's affected my life

I have so much to say on the subject of living with Asperger's Syndrome that I've split it off into a whole page of it's own. I'll be adding more over time, as I think of more things to say to explain what my experience of Asperger's is like. Sometimes it can be difficult though, as it's a bit of a tough topic for me to write about. For example, writing accurately and vividly about my experiences with sensory overload can be very taxing because I have to concentrate on visualizing exactly what that's like to be able to describe it in detail.

My SAD Therapies

Everyone is different, but here's what helps me the most.

Along with a small dose of a common anti-depressant from my doctor, these are the therapies that significantly improve my quality of life and lessen my symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

This is what works for me. Please, consult your doctor before embarking on these or other home therapies of any kind.

Like a punk-rock Peter Pan, I refuse to grow up

Despite the fact that The Big 3-O is looming on my birthday horizon, I routinely wear my hair in some variation of what's come to be my trademark look of sunset-inspired colors. Almost always pink, my hair often sport streaks of blue and purple as well, as well as occasional, somewhat accidental streaks of peachy-blond in places that the hair dye failed to completely reach my super-thick tresses.

Writing on Squidoo

How I make a little extra money, writing articles on Squidoo.com

If you're not already familiar with Squidoo, let me start with the obvious: it's the website you're on right now. :) But what exactly is Squidoo? In essence, it's a place where you can share your thoughts, ideas, information, advice, and so on - and make a few bucks (or more than a few) for yourself or for a charity while you're at it. It's fun, it's easy, it's downright addictive.

Nice to meet you Betsi and thanks for sharing about your illnesses. I too have major depression, but for some reason I prefer cloudy days. Maybe it is because the sunlight triggers my migraines at times. Hope you are doing well.

Nice to meet you Betsi Goutal! Love your hair and your attitude. Tuba Christmas is really cool and thanks for commenting on it. I'm hoping to get to the one in Baltimore or New York one day before I move to Vermont. Oh, but if not then maybe I can convince my son-in-law from LI who now lives in VT to do a solo concert for family HAHAHA~ My security word works for you: purplelick!

Good to meet you Betsi. I am mildly bi-polar but used to get bad depression, more often in winter, so understand how you feel. Glad to know you have found a way to cope.
