Betsy Wetsy Drinks and Wets Like a Real Baby!

Betsy Wetsy became a very special doll to many young girls like myself who were little girls in the 1950's. Why? As the name implied, she actually wet her diaper! That may seem a bit silly thinking back on it in retrospect, but it made the doll so much more real...I felt like a mommy taking care of a real baby, just like my Mommy was doing with my brother and sister that were also born during the '50's...feeding my baby, changing her diapers, and putting her down for naps.

Betsy Wetsy dolls are still available as vintage collectibles, and the doll patterns for dolls the size of Betsy Wetsy are quite popular as well. You will find both here.

Here Are Some Betsy Wetsy Dolls

eBay is one of my favorite places to be, not only to shop and sell, but to browse old items that bring back great memories, so it's a natural for me to take a peek and see what Betsy Wetsy dolls are available...you'll see some cloths, and more depending upon what day you stop by.

The picture of Betsy Wetsy above is from an old eBay listing...if no dolls are available now, items for the doll will appear below.

Betsy Wetsy Trivia

Betsy Wetsy was first introduced in the 1930's, but gained popularity in the 1950's.

Betsy Wetsy History

Betsy Wetsy was a creation of the Ideal Toy Company which was established in the very early 1900's and sold to CBS Toy Co. in the 1980's. Neither of the companies exist any more, but some of the toys, and many of the memories go on.

I cannot think of a better way to share the story of how Betsy Wetsy came to be than through the a classic video. It is not one that I can add to the viewer below, so you will have to click click this link, and you will meet the woman who came up with the idea of Betsy Wetsy, named after her own daughter, and learn many things about how the doll is made...as I watched I realized that, because of the personal touch on each, each one was probably not exactly like the other. Enjoy this step back into the past.

Here is another popular commercial about the then-new Betsy Wetsy Doll, I am not permitted to add it to the viewer, so click here.

Since I want you to have something to enjoy, here are a few classic toy doll commercials.

Betsy Wetsy Doll Cloths Patterns

Several months ago I came across some doll patterns, and among them were patterns for cloths that would fit Betsy Wetsy and other similar sized dolls. They all sold on ebay because making doll cloths is a nice hobby that many enjoy. Here are some that are available now that you might be interested in.

I had one of the first Betsy Wetsy dolls in1938, I was 3 years old. Many happy years of playing later, I got too old for dolls and she disappeared . However I started searching for a 1937-38 vintage doll in about 2000, I now have 2 of them, both have had to have their body replaced; the rubber simply rotted away. Not too surprisingly, along the way I accumulated approximately 100 Ideal Betsy Wetsy dolls, and a few other Ideal dolls and also American Character dolls. Before I knew it I was a collector. I have a website about my dolls if anyone is interested.

My sister and I each got a Betsy Wetsy doll for Christmas! Mama made extra doll clothes for us! We loved our dolls!
  • happynutritionist Feb 29, 2012 @ 10:23 pm | delete
What a great memory...and special that your Mom actually made cloths for the dolls. So sweet!
  • vallain Jan 24, 2012 @ 8:47 pm | delete
We had a Toni doll by Ideal instead of Betsy Wetsy. What hours of fun a doll can be.
  • happynutritionist Feb 29, 2012 @ 10:23 pm | delete
And there were so many different kinds to enjoy:-)

Omg, I was too excited to see Betsy Wetsy it just brought back so many childhood memories. I had no idea she was that old. I am a 90's baby, I was born in 1980, and I will never forget, I received her and a baby skate doll for my 5th birthday. I loved those dolls.
  • grnidlady Dec 17, 2011 @ 2:35 pm | delete
great lens! i loved my betsy wetsy and still have her. :)

I think I had one. For awhile I thought it was a Madame Alexander Kathy Cry Baby but I've decided the feet and the hairline are wrong. I have a photo of me with it at about 2, which was about 1964. Photo was unfortunately B/W but I thought she had a yellow dress and I can tell the toes are well defined and she looks like I had a pacifier around her neck.
Please click on the link and tell me if you think she is a Betsy Wetsy I am holding!

The face looks very similar, matching the lips and the mouth...it may be, but I can't be 100% sure.

I am 81 years old and I had a betsy wetsy in the 30'sw. I would love to see a picture of it,

I didn't own a Betsy-wetsy. I'm from Britain. I always longed for a walkie-talkie doll, but had to wait many years till I had a real baby. Blessed by a squid angel.
  • pam Aug 16, 2011 @ 9:04 am | delete
Yes , I remember Betsy and the tiny tears I had them both and still have them. I am a kid from the 50's ..... they are packed away and now that I crochet im going to dig them out and make them something, Thanks for reminding me of a wonderful memory of the days that were better than now, although we thought it was terrible. It was a time that there was no computers and all this fuss ..... We had imaginations and played out side and went on picnics.
  • happynutritionist Aug 17, 2011 @ 7:58 am | delete
Thanks for stopping by, Pam, yes, those were times of imaginative play. It is wonderful that you still have the dolls, they are valuable both personally and if in good condition as collectibles, I'm sure. Enjoy making cloths for them.

I loved my Betsy Wetsy doll when I was about 4 or 5 (so that would have been 1958-59). I remember a record that went with the doll and the song went something like "Betsy Wetsy never dry". Betsy is long gone but I need to hunt for that record- I know it's in storage along with the other old 45's (although I think the record had a small hole like a 33 even though it looked like a 45. Anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
  • happynutritionist Aug 17, 2011 @ 8:01 am | delete
Glad you enjoyed...I don't remember the record, but do remember listening to 45's...inserting the little adapter so you could play them on your turntable. My my, that was so long ago.
  • Blanche Razo Jul 7, 2011 @ 11:17 am | delete
My last doll was a Betsy Wetsy - I still have it - it came in a big box with little accessories like hair brush, soap dish, washcloth, and other stuff I can't remember. The accessories were in pink and I think there was also a small tub or basin to bath her in. It had diapers and rubber pants - I think. The other girls in the neighborhood would come over and we would play for hours!
  • happynutritionist Aug 17, 2011 @ 7:59 am | delete
Yes, that's right, that's how they came...wonderful that you still have yours. Being the oldest, either my things were broken or handed down, I don't have anything from when I was a young child. What a treasure:-)
  • nancycarol Jul 2, 2011 @ 2:56 pm | delete
I remember these dolls from the 50s, although I was in my teens at that time, but it seemed like all my little nieces and cousins, and everyone wherever I looked, had one. They were quite cute, and little girls just adored being able to do the things real Moms did. Nice lens, very enjoyable!
  • happynutritionist Jul 6, 2011 @ 11:53 am | delete
Then you are a bit ahead of me:-) It is a memorable doll, and a nice way to learn about having a real baby back in that time. Thanks for your visit.
  • sdholloway Jul 2, 2011 @ 12:37 pm | delete
I was just saying to my husband being our almost 4 month old's mother is like having a Betsy Wetsy. I'm constantly changing diapers!
  • happynutritionist Jul 6, 2011 @ 11:54 am | delete
LOL, that's cute. At least you could stop feeding a Betsy Wetsy:-) Thanks for the visit.
  • pimbels Jun 22, 2011 @ 8:26 am | delete
Very interesting. I have never heard of the Betsy Wetsy doll, I had a 'Schildkroete' doll. Nice lens, thank you.
  • Naomitan Apr 30, 2011 @ 4:47 pm | delete
It was interesting. I've never heard about the doll. I used to love a couple of Japanese modern dolls in my childhood... Thank you. :)
  • Tipi Feb 27, 2011 @ 6:10 pm | delete
Instant smile time! Yes, we had a Betsy Wetsy and we sure did love her. There was something special about those wet diapers. Betshy received many hours of tender little mommy love between my sister and I. Unforturnately, she also received a haircut and her hair did not grow back no matter how much water we gave her. Thanks for the sweet memories! I remember always patting her on the back after feeding and never got a single burp.
  • hotbrain Nov 14, 2010 @ 5:54 pm | delete
I had the China-made Betsy Wetsy back in the 1980s! I never knew that she had been around for so long and was not a 'modern' invention!
  • sheilamarie Aug 7, 2010 @ 12:49 am | delete
I can't remember whether I had one or my sister did, but I remember being awed that she actually did pee. There were other peeing dolls after her. I think I called mine "Patsy."What a lot of fun finding your lens! Thanks!
  • bethd821 Jul 5, 2010 @ 6:51 pm | delete
I had a Betsy Wetsy doll (blond hair). I was such a proud "mommy" to her. Thanks for the memories!
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Apr 27, 2010 @ 5:12 pm | delete
Betsy Wetsy sounds familiar, but I think she was before my time.

Thanks for the opportunity to add my doll lenses. I struggled a bit; hope I didn't add them more than once!

P.S. The video on this page wasn't working today when I was here.

I remember that I wanted a Betsy Wetsy so bad as a little girl, but since I was the only girl with a bunch of brothers, and we were dirt poor...I only got toys that could be passed down to boys, same with clothes, lol...I only got dresses if Grandma bought them...but now I finally have a grand-daughter..the first female in 45 yearsin my family (since me) and it is so much fun to spoil her with girly & pink thing, me & my Mom are having a ball!
    Congratulations on Graduating RocketMom!

Hi Evelyn, LOL on the milk, that's too funny...or maybe not:-)

Thanks to eBay it's never too late to have a Betsy Wetsy doll, even for you...so many like to collect the toys they wish they had or did have when they were children and don't have any more.

Thank you for stopping by and your comment.

I never owned an actual Betsy-Wetsy Doll but I remember wanting one. I remember the day that I got a doll that drinks and wets and how much fun it was. My sister and I also learned why not to feed it milk.

I like the history behind the doll. We didn't have her in the UK. The one I remember was the mass produced 'Tiny Tears'. I didn't do dolls - I used to undress them, cut of their hair and draw on them. Not a nice child at all!

This is so cool! I LOVED my Betsy Wetsy dolls when I was young. I had two of them for a while until someone stole on - a trauma well-remembered. I'm so glad to see a lens on this doll. I have actually looked for Betsy Wetsy information on the internet before so I'm sure you'll get some traffic for this lens.
