How much does a betta cost?

The price of betta varies according to how rare it is and how hard it is to get it in your part of the world. In malaysia you can get it for RM 2.00 to RM 3.50. It is as cheap as mollie fish in fact, there was not so long time ago we could get it at only 50 cents per fish.

A quick check on this site aquariumfish.net indicates that the price in US is between 3.50 USD to 7.00 USD.

How long will betta fish last without food?

I was searching whether its feasible to keep betta fish in my office

The safest time range that you can leave betta fish unfed is between 3 to 4 days.

More then 10 to 14 days it'll die.

Why? because...
Nippyfish blog's explanation
Excerpt : "I have a four day rule. If I am gone less than four days then I don't bother finding someone to feed the fish"
Yahoo answer a concerned betta fish owner
Excerpt : "he'd be fine for up to 10 days without food, although more than a week you should probably have someone feed him for you. but 4 days is fine"
bettatalk.com explains
Excerpt: " It is a good idea to not feed your betta one day a week. Let his digestive system rest, let him clean himself out a bit"

Betta fish care top tips

  • Betta fish do not need air pumps, in fact it might be harmful for them
  • One betta per fish bowl/aquarium only
  • they like blood worms, but as a staple give them freeze dried food
  • use only natural waterplants

Vacation fish feeder or Automatic fish feeder with timer

If you're unsure or you're leaving your betta fish for a long time ..

The cheap way is to buy the vacation feeder which is available in packs of 7 days and packs of 14 days. Only thing is better move your fish to a bigger bowl in case the water gets cloudy.

Another way is to buy a fish feeder with timer that can feed your fish each day with a timer to set.

Why japanese fighting fish are kept in small bowls?

because betta fish do not need air pumps, they can be kept in clear fish bowls!

This fish thrive in small puddles of water that exist in paddy fields... Their fins and build are made to swim in still water.

They can live in water that is streaming or big aquariums with airpumps. But their body is not built to withstand that. Its better to simulate their natural environment. They are happy to live in a smaller living environment where the water is stagnant.

Also remember not to put male and male together or they will fight to death.

How to diffrentiate male and female betta fish?

Basically like every other animal in the animal kingdom, the male is much more beautiful-er than the female of its species. This rings true indeed for our fighting fish. Male will typically have more garish bright colors and flowier ribbon like fins.

Betta fighting fish video showcase

A showcase of different colourful breeds of the Japanese fighting fish.

The other two videos are the two Japanese fighting fish fighting. I don't applaud them but then again, maybe this will satisfy your curiosity and deter many others to put two Betta in a bowl because fight is what happens when you put two fighting fish together.

Betta's may not mind living in small pools of water but that does not mean they thrive in it,
When you move them from their small unheated bowl (which i originally had) to a 40 liter heated aquarium (about 10gal) they suddenly become a lot more active and have so much more personality, and they also become much more colorful and live a longer life

You can keep a male and females together as long as you have plants/logs/other things which breaks the line of sight of the fishes :)

(I know that bit because i have baby fighters YAY!!!)

and i have never ever ever heard them being called the japanese fighting fish
(they came from thailand which was originally called Siam from which they got the name
"Siamese!!!!!!!!!"

I was at a client's home today and she had 3 wall-mounted fishbowls, each with a Betta. If I didn't have cats, I would try one or two myself.
