Selecting the Proper Tank or Aquarium For Your Betta Fish Is an Important Decision
You have now taken the leap and purchased your new Betta Fish. The choices of what to put him in is basically a bowl or an aquarium. We're going to compare the advantages and disadvantages of both betta fish bowls and aquariums and also look at the other important factors in determining the proper housing for your betta fish.
The Ideal Size of Tank For Your Betta Fish
Selecting the Correct Size of Tank is Important
Betta Fish have become more popular in recent years and more people are bring them home in a small vase or cup that they got at the pet store. Betta Fish are beautiful and can be quite addicting. However, they are delicate and do require a little special care. The small bowl or vase that they come in from the pet store are not the ideal place for them. The ideal size for a Betta Fish is a ten gallon tank. This size will provide enough water to have some stability. Anything smaller will result in a quicker depletion of the minerals that are needed by your Betta Fish. The very minimum size that you would ever want to consider is a two gallon tank. If you are going to be adding other fish to your aquarium, then consider going up to 20 gallons.

Frequency of Water Changes in Your Tank
Maintaining Good Water Quality Requires Proper Changing
With a larger tank, you only have to change about ten percent of the water every couple of weeks. Changing the water in the larger tank every 2 weeks helps to restore the minerals in the water and also keep the tank clean and avoid the bacteria that can be very harmful to a Betta. If you were using a smaller bowl or vase, it would be necessary to frequently change all of the water at one time and this can be very stressful to your pet. A smaller bowl could require a water change on a daily basis in order to control pH level and water quality.

Maintaining the Proper Water Temperature
Betta Fish Are Delicate and Need A Constant Temperature
To keep your Betta healthy, happy, and active, the ideal temperature should be set around 78-80 degrees. Bettas thrive in warm water since they are typically grown in small bodies of warm water in Asia. If the temperature drops to around 75 degrees, the Betta will become lethargic and hover around the bottom of the tank.A larger tank will have less fluctuation in temperature than a small bowl or vase. Large temperature fluctuations are harmful to Bettas and can even kill them. The larger tanks are less susceptible to temperature change in the outside environment and are better able to maintain a steady temperature. The larger tanks also give you room to add a heater and still have room for the Betta to swim and find his favorite hiding places.
If you follow the suggestions at this site, you will always have beautiful and healthy betta fish.
Put the Proper Gravel in the Bottom of Your Tank
Gravel Aids in Maintaining Good Water Quality
The bottom of the tank should have about a quarter to one-half inch of gravel. While some bacteria is bad, it is necessary to allow beneficial nitrifying bacteria to grow in this gravel. The nitrifying bacteria helps to reduce the toxicity of the water and also improves the general quality of the water. Having the gravel increases the surface area and allows more of this good bacteria to grow.It is normal for uneaten food and feces to accumulate on the bottom of a tank or bowl. In a small bowl or vase, this will cause the toxicity of the water to be higher and it will be necessary to clean more often. If the bacteria levels elevate, this can lead to dropsy, fin rot, and a number of other health problems.

Proper pH Levels for a Betta Fish
pH Levels Should Be Monitored
The water for a Betta should be maintained in a pH range of 6.8-7.5. This means that the water should be neutral to slightly acidic. Larger tanks are better able to maintain a steadier pH level than smaller bowls.

What About Filters?
The Proper Type of Filter Must be Selected
It is not recommended to use power filters or heads in tanks with Bettas. Bettas do not like rapidly moving water. They can become more stressed out and this could lead to more disease and health problems.
Decorations For Your Tank
Bettas Need Safe Hiding Spots
Bettas like to have hiding spots. Natural plants can provide excellent hiding spots while improving the water quality at the same time. Plastic plants can have rough or sharp edges and these can damage the delicate fins of a Betta. You can experience all the pleasures of owning a Betta Fish by following the correct procedures. - I just recently got a Betta and I got a 2 1/2 gallon filtered tank. At the top of the tank there is a light bulb that makes the top of the tank rather hot. Does anybody know if Betta fish like this kind of light?

- Once you consider the marine animals that you want, think back to the aquarium size. In any event, a lot of people will recommend that larger tanks are best but if you are only housing one or two fish then there is really no need for ample space. Besides the size of the tank, the size of the animal should be taken into consideration as well.
