A couple of years ago I was very successful with breeding my bettas. I had several shelves of small fry and they were sooo cute, growing very fast. However, it was also winter and we had a severe storm that cut our power for 4 or 5 days. Not only were we cold, but every last betta died from the chill. There was nothing I could do. I wrapped them in blankets and bubble wrap, etc, but it was useless. Heartbreaking!

If you put any fish in suitable conditions and setups, (making sure that they are a pair) you can breed alost any fish! If you are a first - timer at breeding freshwater fish, I recommend starting off with guppiues as you can learn very quickly by making mistakes.

My sister does Bettas big time. They are very big attention hogs and will swim to the edge of the bowl whenever anyone walks by. Who says you cant bond with a fish!

    PREPARE BETTA FISH SPAWNING TANK
    Written by Tossatam Siripoonsap
Many betta lovers failed in breeding betta with many reasons. One of the main reason is the condition of spawn tank is not suitable so the male doesn't make bubble nest...he doesn't want to breeding.
Today I would like to share how to prepare betta fish spawning tank. It's my way. I usually prepare spawn tank with this solution...GUARANTEE 90% success!!
1.I use tap water for breeding betta fish...add tap water into spawn tank about 4-5 inch height. Add a little salt and put 2-3 Indian Almond leaves into the tank. Put aquarium plants that you can find at your home. See the picture.

    2. Put the male & the female's tank into this spawn tank. Let them look at one another. Give them food 2 times daily.

Leave it about 5-7 days...then put the male & the female into this spawn tank.
I think you will success in breeding your betta fish :)

yes actually its one of the best variety to breed.mainthing is you need to have a good matured male then the chances of getting full hatching is more.

i'm just starting to breed them with my neibour but the girl is bigger than the boy, should we wait till the boy grows??????
  • melissa Feb 25, 2010 @ 10:32 pm | delete
yes it is strongly recomended because the male wouldnt be able to squeeze the female hard enough to get the eggs out.

I have bred Bettas several times in my life. I remember the first time was when I was about 13 in Idaho. I had a hard time trying to sell them off to the local stores (there weren't a lot of them) but was able to trade them in for fish food for my other aquariums. I think I even ended up feeding some of them to my dempsey and turtles!
It was a great experience and I learned a lot. I remember one time I ended up with a brood that ended up with 25% of them with crooked backs. Gave me some real experience in genetics at the time.

Hi Melissa the trick in breeding baby bettas all liesin keeping a constant temperature on the water surface ie do not open the tank lid for the first month,This is due to the betta being a labrinth fish & during this time the organ in the head develops! Any change to the surface tempertaure during this stage wil give the fish a cold & the labrinth willl block up thus killing the fry.the way to avoid this is to place lettuce leaves in a jar with tank water & leave it in the sun to go green this green water creates single cell organisims that the fry eat, after that use a syringe & pump tube & introduce infusoria baby brine shrimp which you need to cultivate yourself & add them via the syringe & ensure the tank is completely sealed with tape,Because the infusoria grow in salt water wash them in fresh water before introduction to the tank,As for getting the fish to grow big use a 6 foot tank & once the fry are 1 month old introduce them to this tank,The more room the quicker they grow simple fact & feed plenty of brine shrimp daily for best results,After four months you wil be able to sex the fish ie male from female & remove all the males or they will kill each other at this point,The females will tolerate each other in a large tank.If I can help any further please dont hesite to return an E-Mail to me Sean Phillips PS water temp 28-30 degrees half tank water purified & half distilled water add peat moss or peat moss extract to this & run no pump just an air stone 2 hours on 4 hours off

  • kenzie Apr 8, 2012 @ 11:04 pm | delete
hello my name is makenzie and i think i may be able to help you!ok so i think you should go to your local pet store and ask for blood worms, brine shimp, and any other great fresh foods like this.DONT feed them the same thing every day mix it up a bit,and maby get some live plants.dont be moving them around much, just find a nice dim lighted area,of if not then just dont give them constent sun, or light.andd maby even get some nice lilly rice pads(water plant)so just let mr know if this isnt working and ill let you know what i can think of!

do pet shops take the baby bettas
  • ... Feb 14, 2012 @ 1:56 pm | delete
Pet shops probably wouldn't take fry. The only fry they will take are fry that they bred, which I have seen.

  • emily Aug 10, 2009 @ 6:12 pm | delete
i dont really know yet i am 11 and i dont know how many they have if you know then write and ill read it how many usually survife whrn you dont have a sponge thingy or a filter just a fish bole?
  • Nigel Nov 25, 2009 @ 10:32 pm | delete
they have about 56 or 46. If you do keep them in a fish bowl all will die. You have to let go of all or some into a safe enviromental pond with no predator. After a week or so they will grow to about 1 inch
