In the Wild betta live in the rice fields and rivers of southeast asia, so they are pretty hardy.

they have about 56 or 46. If you do keep them in a fish bowl all will die. You have to let go of all or some into a safe enviromental pond with no predator. After a week or so they will grow to about 1 inch

Betta Fish Care Basics

Miss these Betta Fighting Fish care Tips and You Could Invite Disease

In these few paragraphs I want to take a look at some of the basics with regards to how to take care of a betta fish. There are certain needs and requirements to caring for betta fish and once you understand this your fish will be a lot happier.

Water Quality - As with all tropical fish The PH level of your water source is important to maintaining healthy fish and betta are no exception. The betta fish prefers as close to neutral water as possible, 7.0, but can manage in water that is between 6.5 and 7.5.

Water Temperature - The temperature of the water inside your tank is also important, as the betta fish is considered a tropical fish. Water temperature between 72 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for healthy betta fish care.

One way to tell if the water is too hot or cold is by watching the betta fish's behavior. A sluggish, slow moving fish is likely feeling a chill and a hyperactive fish (unless it is feeding time) indicates water that the water might be too hot. Either of these symptions is indications that the fish is under stress and so you should take notice.

Vegetation - Remember the betta is native to countries like Tailand and Vietnam and as such wild bettas are often found in rice fields and muddy rivers. Plants help to keep your aquarium stress-free, bettas love to rest on the leaves of plants so adding some plants (plastic or real) is a great way to insure a healthy betta.

Feeding Your Betta - Bettas only require that you feed them once a day. Betta fish prefer live food (who wouldn't if you were a fish), but feeding them freeze dried food is often alot more convenient and an affordable alternative for proper betta fish care.

There is special betta food available for daily staple feeding often called betta pellets, but always supplement this with some freeze-dried mosquito larvae - called "bloodworms", or brine shrimp. I wouldn't do this everyday but it helps to insure a healthy happy betta fish.

Breeding Betta Fish 101

A Quick Primer on Breeding Betta Fish Successfully

Well first off let me say that there is no possible way I could go into all details about how to successfully breeding bettas. That would take several chapters on its own, thankfully it's this subject is fully covered in beautiful detail inside Betta Fish Secrets: How to keep & Breed Betta Fish.

I remember when I was a boy and breed fish as a hobby I quickly found how tricky it actually was to try and breed bettas. Breeding betta fish is definitely not easy and for those you want to learn more i do highly recommend the above mentioned book, it will give you all the information you need to successfully breed bettas.

For those who would like a quick primer on betta breeding, here goes, my top 5 quick tips on breeding betta fish successfully:

1) Don't use Store Bought Bettas. Well, I hated to break it to you like that, but unless you have quality breeding betta stock to start with, you will NEVER produce any quality bettas. Why simply because for the most part store bought bettas are old fish with no drive if you know what I mean, often unhealthy to start off with and have the wrong tail type.

2) Avoid the larger, flashier bettas I know it sounds weird and contrary to what you would think in breeding any type of quality animal, but remember Young bettas may not look very striking, as they have not yet had a chance to blossom and to grow striking finnage but they generally have alot more energy are most robust. Seasoned betta breeders will always go for young, smaller pairs.

3) Always buy breeding betta stock in pairs It is always best to get both your male and female from the same breeder. If at all possible, you should buy a brother and sister. If no siblings are available then ask the breeder you are buying from to select a suitable mate for your betta with compatible genes. This is a very important detail too often overlooked by beginners. Unless you have both pieces of the puzzle, you will not be able to successfully reproduce the traits of the strain you have selected.

4) Always buy at LEAST 2 pairs of the strain you wish to breed. Why quite simply bettas are picky breeders. Bettas have tastes and personalities just like people and not every time you put two together are you going to end up with a love connection. No love, no spawning. Plus one male might not be a good breeder but his brother is. One pair might get sick, and the list goes on. So make sure you always buy at LEAST 2 pair.

5) Buy ONLY from a reputable breeder Buy only from a knowledgeable, reputable, established, experienced, ethical and seasoned IBC breeder.

#3 - Buying brother & sister for breeding is not a smart suggestion & it is not backed up with any scholarly research articles. With any species it is always better to breed animals that are not brother and sister to avoid Gin Defects. IE look at the cultures where brothers & sisters or cousins marry each other, they all ware glasses, their cohort of people usually have variety of genetic diseases due to the fact that their genes have not had the opportunity to mix that well. Aren't inter racial couple babies usually way cuter?

Super lens! I've had bettas for years. I've never tried breeding them though, I couldn't stand the thought of the possibility of losing the female. They are spectacular fish though. I'm rolling this one to my betta lens.
