Betta Fish Care - Caring for the Siamese Fighting Fish

Betta Fish (Siamese fighting fish or Betta Splendens) are a wonderful species for aquariums. They are relatively easy to care for (once you understand their particular requirements) and with their spectacularly beautiful colors and fin shapes it would be hard to find a more sought after species of freshwater aquarium fish.

Betta fish are native to the Mekong basin in Southeast Asia. BETTA SPLENDENS, as they are commonly known,  can be supplied in many different colors with new strains constantly being developed by breeders across the world. Male BETTAS have a wide range of colors, red, blue, magenta, orange, yellow,  green and metalic colors such as copper and gold. Breeders have also achieved different color patterns such as marble and butterfly designs. Female BETTAS are almost always less colorful.

Caring for Betta fish requires a careful understanding of the breed and their specific requirements.  If you are the owner or are thinking about owning Betta fish then I highly recommend reading and using the expert advice in Marcus Song's book "Caring for Betta Fish".  It contains everything you need to know about caring and enjoying these wonderful aquarium fish.

Tips for Betta Fish Care

BETTA FISH grow to an overall length of about 6 cm and have a life span of around four years. Looked after well in an aquarium, Betta fish have often lived well beyond six years. Aquarium temperatures should be maintained between 24 to 30 °C, colder water temperatures will lower the BETTAS' immune system and result in illness.

Captive bred BETTA FISH have several different tail shapes including Veiltail, Crowntail, Half-moon, and Double-tail. Double-tail BETTAS also have a significantly elongated dorsal fin.

Because of the aggressive nature of BETTA FISH, particularly the males who are very territorial, other aquarium residents must be carefully chosen and two male BETTA SPLENDENS should never be housed in the same tank unless they are separated by a dividing wall.

Betta Fish on Wikipedia

The Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens), also known as the "betta fish" or just "betta", is one of the most popular species of freshwater aquarium fish. It is native to the rice paddies of Thailand and Cambodia and called pla-kad or trey krem ("Fighting Fish") in its native Thai/Khmer.

The Betta fish is a relatively inexpensive way to enter the aquatic species ownership realm. Because these fish are descendants of the wild betta fish which live in oxygen-poor environments, Siamese fighting fish are capable of living in smaller containers than most aquarium fish, without the filters and aerators that other aquarium fish require. The name Betta (or betta) is . The name Betta is not to be confused with the Greek letter beta. Instead, the name of the genus is derived from ikan bettah, taken from a local dialect of Thailand.

B. splendens usually grow to an overall length of about , though some varieties reach in length. In recent years breeders have been able to create "Giant Bettas" that exceed due to the manipulation of a mutant gene. Although bettas are known for their brilliant colors and large, flowing fins, the natural coloration of B. splendens is a dull green and brown, and the fins of wild specimens are relatively short. However, brilliantly colored and longer finned varieties (i.e. Veiltail; Delta; Superdelta; and Halfmoon) have been developed through selective breeding.

The betta is a member of the gourami family (family Osphronemidae) of order Perciformes, but was formerly classified among the Anabantidae. Although there are nearly 50 other types of bettas, B. splendens is the most popular species among aquarium hobbyists, particularly in the United States.
