Betta Fish Fin Rot - What Is It?

Betta fish fin rot is one of the easiest marine diseases to cure. It is also one of the easiest for your betta fish to catch.

The good news is that betta fish fin rot is one hundred percent preventable, and that it is entirely in your hands to make sure your betta fish stays healthy and doesn't catch it.

Betta fish fin rot is a bacterial infection that causes the fins and the tail of your fish to deteriorate. They appear to look rotten and discolored. A normal betta fish should have vibrant colors, and the tail and fins should be fully extended and flowing in the water.

The #1 Cause of Betta Fish Fin Rot

Poor Water Conditions

The number one cause of Betta fish fin rot is poor water conditions. Although injury, improper diet, or some other disease that may be causing your fish stress could also cause fin rot to occur, dirty water is the leading cause of this problem.

Let's review the basics of how your aquarium's water can get dirty:

  • You aren't changing your fish's water on a frequent enough basis.
  • You don't keep your aquarium's water temperature warm enough, within a comfortable range for your fish.
  • You don't remove or replace any rotting plants in your aquarium.
  • You aren't properly cleansing the aquarium of all dirt, including the fish's excrement.
  • You aren't removing excess, uneaten food from the aquarium. (The uneaten food can get spoiled and can contaminate the water.)

Does it sound like we're staying the obvious here?

But you'd be surprised at how so many betta fish owners neglect to take some of the above items into consideration, out of sheer ignorance, laziness, or neglect.

How To Cure Betta Fish Fin Rot

What Should You Do?

Okay, so your little marine friend has a bad case of betta fish fin rot. What should you do?

  • Make it a point to change the water and clean out your tank every day until the symptoms of fish rot subside.
  • Some aquarium salt (not to be confused with table salt) can help to kill off any lingering bacteria in the tank as well as off of your fish's skin. This should be available at your local pet store.
  • You can optionally feed your fish some vitamins. (Yes they actually make vitamins for betta fish, which are available at your local pet store.) This will help boost your betta's immune system.
  • Be sure to continue feeding your fish a healthy, nutritionally balanced diet.
  • As a worst case scenario, you can get betta medication for your fish. But this really should be only used as a last resort.

It's amazing what a difference clean water can make, to cure betta fish fin rot, isn't it?
