Betta or Siamese Fighting Fish
Betta, Betta splendens, also called Betta Fish or Siamese Fighting fish, are popular pets in the United States and around the world. They can be bred by owners. Betta can be found in most pet stores and Betta supplies are easy to find.
Betta have been kept as fighting fish as far back as 150 years ago. They spread to Germany in 1896 and came to the United states in the early 1900's. The special colorful breeds are now all over the place, ready to find new owners.

Why I Love My Betta
Shark Bait Hoo-ha-ha
I've owned many types of fish, from goldfish to zebra danios. The reason I love bettas is the ease of care and the interaction these fish seem to enjoy with people. My current betta, Shark Bait, follows me as I walk around his bowl. He also signals me if I forgot to feed him by swimming excitedly as I go near him. No other fish I've owned has been so interactive.
I've also had great luck in keeping bettas. I kept a beautiful red alive for three years with no extraordinary efforts. I kept it fed, cleaned the bowl (or cookie jar or vase, whatever I felt like putting it in) when it became cloudy or stinky, and added a supplement from time to time to prevent disease.
I also like the fact that I can pick up a male for about $4 USD at Petco or Petsmart. Females are even cheaper. Yes, the fancy ones are more expensive but I never felt the need to breed a betta so I never felt the need to pay more than $10 for one.

- Welcome to the Tropical Fish group. You have a really good start here. It would be nice to see some large betta fish photos, too. And folks might like to see some betta breeders or sellers, maybe? Just a suggestion. :)
