Sick Betta Fish Diseases
Common Symptons of Betta Fish Diseases
Lets' Diagnose A Sick Betta Fish
The Nasty Fungal InfectionBetta has white cottony like patches on its body or head. He may be less active, may have stopped eating, fins may be clumped, color may be pale.
Crazy Constipation:
You will notice a bloated stomach and loss of appetite. This is usually due to overfeeding.
Tail or Fin Rot
The tail or fins will have a ragged look. The Bettas' fins will look like something has took a bite of them.
ICK
Betta has white dots (looks like he was sprinkled with salt) all over his body and head, even eyes. He may be less active, may have stopped eating, fins may be clumped. he may also be darting and scratching against rocks, plants and whatever else he can find.
Gill Parasites
Scratching itself on aquarium objects. Strange swimming patterns and breathing problems.
Popeye
One or both of the eyes will start bulging out. In a couple of days the eye might look so ugly it will scare you.
Dropsy
It is easy to diagnose a betta with Dropsy: Look for two signs: an abnormally big (bloated) belly and if you look at betta from the top, raised scales. Scales will look like an open pine cone. If you see this, you are out of luck, and so is Betta. He will soon go to betta heaven.

More Symptons and Diagnoses of Betta Fish Diseases
Swim Bladder Disease
Your Betta Fish will float in some abnormal way. Maybe uncontrollably to the top, sideways, or have difficulty swimming and will swim at awkward angle.
Velvet
The main indicator that your Betta has Velvet is a copper or rust colored dusting over the betta's body. Bettas that have Velvet will be lethargic, show clamped fins, and will have loss of appetite.
Tuberculosis
Yes folks this is Tuberculosis and it can be transferred to humans if you have open wounds. My advice, put on some long gloves that covers up 3/4 of you arms before handling the Betta Fish or water. Let's look at the symptons. Loss of appetite, cloudy or popeye eyes, colors have faded, clamped fins, seclusion and rapid breathing. This is a difficult disease to diagnose since it has a lot of the same symptoms as other diseases.
Depression
Just like us fish get depress to. Let's talk about some of the symptons. Bettas may or may not have slightly clamped fins, lay at bottom or at surface, not eat, barely swim around. They will not flare or build bubble nests.
Mouth Fungus
Visual Symptons: The Betta Fish will have a whitish fungus around the mouth and lips. Looks kinda of like cotton. The fish infected with cotton mouth will lose their appetite and become very sluggish.

- I have a beta, male, named "fishy" and he has had what we think is ich and fin rot, we are trying to fix those issues and just noticed he has what looks like a cut or a scale seperation on his back.Looks like the has cut himself, but we have no plants, only smooth rocks. He has lost all of his bottom fins and now just has his top fins. He has his two side fins but they are small now. We are trying to fix these problems with treatment and 50%water changes but not working. Even got him a new tank with filter and light. Is it too late or is there something I should do more? Do you know what the cut like part is?

- Just got a new male betta fish for my little girl. I noticed when I broght him home , he has a white patch on top of his head. He also has some red spots on his face. I took some pictures of him and took it to a local pet store. They think is could just be a part of him, but not for sure. He ( Rainbow ) seems to be fine and is eating well. Could he be sick and is there anything I should watch out for ?

- My baby is pineconing. He is not bloated, though. He has loss of appetite and is not very active. He also has a white fuzzy spot coming out of one side of his face, not on his face but btween his face and his fin. I noticed this all happening about 4-5 days ago. I have him at the petstore being medicated and monitored. Is he going to make it?

- My daughter's betta fish has sticky fins, and is unactive and pale. I have tried changing the tank, and added Bettafix for the second day. My other daughter has a flourishing betta, and I haven't done anything different. Both fish have 3 gal tanks (recommended by the pet store) and live plants. I did take the plant out of the sick betta's tank. Should I have kept it in?? Please help with some suggestions. It will break my 7 yrs old heart if another fish dies.
Many thanks

- Hello,
I have a male betta named Blueribbon. He is bloated, but does not show signs (pine coning of scales) of dropsy, or constipation or bladder disorder. He is active and eats normally (total 2-4 Hakari bio-gold pellets a day, freeze dried bloodworms and brine shrimp twice a week, half a thawed frozen pea twice a week and fasted for one day a week.
He eliminates normally.
I do partial (1/3-1/2) water changes daily and full changes with rinsing of tank contents weekly with water treatments and aquari-salt. Temprature range is 75-80 degrees.
I have givin him Maracyn Two for a cycle and treated for parasites for a cycle. I put Melafix in his water at every full change and redose in smaller amount every other partial.
I don't know what else to do for him.
He seems happy, is playful, eats well, and doesn't act lethargic and swims normally.
Any suggusetions?

- We bought Spotty like a month ago, he was fine until this last week that he started to act strange. He doesn't want to eat, actually when we feed him he looks like he is hungry, he will go for one pellet chew and spit it back and try no more. His fins are tiny bit ragged but no more sypmtoms. He is white with a lot of different colors spots, so its hard to recognize any "rash" or fungus. Please help us, we feel so bad since out other fish "Spooky" passed away last month and our kids (4yr old and 2 yr old) are very concern, frustrated, and needless to say, sad! Thanks, xoxo.
