Betta Fish Is The Siamese Fighting Fish
What is interesting about these Betta fish fighting is that it's unlike the typical cock or dog fighting. In these Siamese fighting fish tournaments the actual fight was a test to the bravery of the fish, rather than a fight to see who can damange more or who can kill.
Betting on the fights was very popular and spectators would put money on how long aparticular fish would fight and which one would give up first. Most fish would only fight once or twice since then they had provern their bravery and would live out the remainder of their lives being pampered and used for breeding.

Betta Fish Natural Habitat
Shallow, tropical water is Betta fish's natural habitat. This is because they need to surface frequently in order to breathe air. they can be found in fresh water ponds, slow moving streams, rice paddies and drainage ditches. Betta fish have also been know to thrive in large puddles. Their natural food source are insects and mosquite larvae. Today Betta breeding is popular and if you decide to buy a Betta fish it will definately not come from a large. murky puddle. Betta Fish Breeding History
Historical accounts tell us that a friend fo the King of Sian, Dr. Theodore Cantor received a pair of breeding Bettas from the king in 1840. The doctor wrote a scientific paper on them, giving them the name of "Macropodus Pugnax" after breeding and studying them for several years. To his surprise, shortly after the paper was published he discovered that a species by that name aldready exsited so the fish were renamed "Betta Splendens"It is known that several breeding pairs were sent to Germany in 1896. then in 1910 Frank Lock from San Francisco imported several Bettas to the USA. He noticed that one of the fish that he received had unusual red fins and he excitedly thought he had discovered and new species and named it "Betta Cambodia". The fact is he got one of the first Betta splendens that had naturally developed new colors and characteristics through Betta breeding.
Breeders have since then been able to develop Bettas with all of the vibrant coloring an varied fin shapes that we see today. Betta breeding is very profitable and an ongoing passion for many people. Some of those breeders started wiht just one or two Bettas in a small aquarium.
Is Betta Fish Expensive ?
Will I go bankrupt if I choose a family of Bettas
If you want to enter the aquatic species ownership realm the Betta fish is a good choice since it it relatively inexpensive. This is because these fish are are descendants of a wild beta fish that live in oxygen-poor enviroments. Betta fish or Siamese fighting fish can live in smaller containers than most aquarium fish and without the filters and aerators that most other aquarium fish require but you will need a heater to keep the temperature steady. You can expect to pay somewhere between 3-8 dollar pr. fish.Get help selecting the perfect Betta for you at BettaFishBreeding.info
Buying A Betta Fish
There are a few things to keep in mind
If you have decided to buy your first Betta fish here is how you do it.1. Research the internet for a good place to buy you Betta fish. It is best to buy from a know breeder that is trusted and has good reputation. I would not recommend that you visit your local pet store for the fish. It's more likely you will have health and decease problems if you do.
2. Remember that Betta fish cannot be in a tank with another Betta fish since they will attack each other. If you want more than one then onsider sperading them in your home. The lady Betta fish can live in a community tank with other types of fish, they don't have the same lively colors as the male but they are still beautiful and fun to watch.
3. Discuss with the breeder what kind of tank you should get for the Beta fish. I he does not sell you all the supplies you need then visir your local pet store. The Betta fish can live in a small tank but i would recommend that you go for at least 2 gallon tank (preferably 5gallon - 20 liter) as it will make the living conditions of the fish better and decrease the risk of deseace or health problems. You can decorate it with rocks, trees, treasure chest or other ornaments the shop is selling. Betta's are very comfortable in small areas so make sure you are able to make the tank intimate. You have to buy a heater to keep the water temperature steady at 78-80 degrees. Don“t forget to buy Betta fish food and I also recommend that you buy a "stress coat" to add to the water. That will ease the transition of your Betta fish.
4. When you are back home, add water to your Betta fish tank, but DON'T LET THE BETTA IN YET. You have to wait until the water is at room temperature before putting the betta fish in his enviroment. You also have to maker sure that you add water from the bowl (or bag) the Betta fish came in to it's new tank. Remember that proper Betta fish care can safe you a lot of trouble.

A Happy Betta Fish
A Happy Betta Fish
This is my male Veiltail Betta, T-Rex, in his 3 gallon Eclipse tank. I HIGHLY recommend this tank for Bettas! This is the minimum size tank they should be kept in. Just because they CAN live in less does not mean they SHOULD! This tank is excellent because it has a great Bio-Wheel filter built into the hood which is very quiet and causes very little current. It just ripples the surface of the water and does not knock the Betta around even if he swims underneath it. A 25 watt heater fits in perfectly (stick it horizontally near the bottom) to keep temp at a nice 79-80F. The hood has a built in florescent light to show the Bettas colors nicely. You can clearly see the Betta is very happy and healthy. The tank can have a couple plants and a small ornament and just looks so much nicer than those tiny "Betta prisons" or ugly small bowls.

Very well executed first Betta Fish home
Culligan the Betta Fish in his 5 Gallon Eclipse Hex Tank
Here is Culligan, my first betta fish (well, first fish, period). I got him as a gift from my boyfriend about two weeks ago. He was in a tiny cup and I didn't know anything about fish so I went out and got a pretty 1 gallon glass vase and kept him in there for about a week. Then, I read up on bettas and went out and bought him this 5 gallon aquarium. If you are thinking about getting a betta fish or currently own one in a small container (under 1 gallon), please go out and get him a bigger bowl/tank to live in. It's a myth that they prefer to be confined to small environments. I mean, would you want to live out your life in some stupid cup? From what I've read from various betta care sites, 2 gallons is the minimum tank a betta should be kept in. And of course, bigger is better. A good website for betta basics is http://nippyfish.net/ For answers to hundreds of betta issues, I like http://nippyfish.blogspot.com/ Anyway, sorry about the lecture. Hope you enjoy watching Culligan swim around :P Oh yea.. I ordered some marimo balls from overseas but they're not here yet. When they arrive, I'm going to get one or two ghost shrimp and put them all in there. Is keeping ghost shrimp w/a betta in a 5 gallon tank a good idea? I just want them to eat whatever Culligan doesn't. Thanks for any help! UPDATE 12/31/08: Since this video, I bought a 50w Whisper aquarium heater by Tetra. I've also replaced his two plastic plants and resin rock with four silk aquarium plants of various sizes. I've also added 6 marimo balls of assorted sizes and two mini terracotta pots because I'm planning to get get 3 ghost shrimp when they're in stock at one of the petstores here. I might make a video later.
