At the Pet Store: Choosing a Betta Splendens
Color: Look to see that their colors are bright and not dull and faded.
Activity: Take the cup with the betta splendens you're interested and place it next to another cup with a betta in it and see if your betta will perk up and start showing off. A normal healthy betta will always show off to another male betta.
Signs of Illness: If you see white spots or white fungus growing on your betta, you might want to pass. It will take time and lots of tender care to bring back a sick betta.
Did You Know? - Bettas Are Also Called Siamese Fighting Fish
If you have two males, kept in separate tanks of course, and you put the tanks next to each other, you will be able to see some very awesome displays from your fish.
Bringing Your New Betta Splendens Home
The larger the tank, the better for him. Those tiny betta tanks they sell at pet stores don't provide enough space at all for your betta. I wouldn't go for anything under 1 gallon.
The best 1 gallon tank that I've seen that would be great as a betta home are these:

Top FinĀ® Aqua Scene Desktop Aquariums
The 2 gallon would work as well and your betta will appreciate the extra room, but for basics, the 1 gallon works very well.
These tanks come complete with air pump, filter, and light!
Feeding Your New Betta Splendens
Now that your new betta splendens is all settled in its new home, you'll need to get it to eat.Bettas are normally raised on live food so the transition from their breeding grounds to your home as a pet can sometimes be a bit choppy.
Your new betta may not understand that the little things floating on the water is actually edible food.
To get your betta interested in the food, try pushing the food around with a toothpick and see if your betta perks up. If your betta takes it, watch him to see that he actually swallows it and doesn't spit it back up.
Don't worry if your betta refuses to eat for a day or two. It may take that long for it to realize that what he's tasting is food.
If though your betta still isn't eating after 2 days, you may want to try feeding him freeze dried worms and doing the same movement with the toothpick.
And if all else fails, you can always resort to live worms. Yummy! Live worms are great as a betta treat!
I recommend Omega One Betta Food.

Enjoying and Playing With Your Betta Splendens
You can take a mirror and place it next to him for him to show off his beautiful fins and his rough and tough exterior!
With patience, you can even teach him to jump up and touch your finger!
How Long Do Bettas Live?
When a betta gets older, you will notice that its chin will start turning white. Kinda like our hair getting white when we get old. I've noticed that this happens at around 4 or 5 years old.

- Hi everyone! I actually have 3 bettas! The first one is red, with clear fin tips. His name is Amigo and he lives in a 3 gallon Eclipse. Since he was my first he deserves to be spoiled lol.
here are some pics of him:

the second I got is black, and his name is Boa, after the Japanese singer (lol). He's a little more reserved, but likes to show off now that I've had him for a little while...

The last one I have is Harvey, and he's really quite stunning! He is still small but I'm sure he will grow to be a beautiful betta <33

- I just got my betta boy yesterday along with his sweety... LOL... I call them Beauty and Beast.... *Grin... Beast is a beauty.... and Beauty is quite plain... I have something to add to the above article... for those interesting in breeding your bettas... a neat trick to finding out weather your femail is ready to breed is to place her container where your male can see her... watch his Fantastic breeding display... but watch close for your femails response... namely her coloration... if she show horizontal stripes shes not ready to breed... but if her color darkens and she shows wide vertical stripes... get ready to fix up a breeding tank complete with a breeding box for your new Pair!!! sometimes the femail will look almost as lovely as the male... even with the shorter fins and plainer colors.... she can show just as flashily!!!
LOL!!!
Good Luck and Calm Waters!!!

- My betta is a deep red. I call him Krimson. He flared a lot on day two that I got him; but day one he didn't. Now he does not flare much anymore. However he is still very skiddish and darts away at things that appear fast moving to him, or moderate taps on the kitchen counter that eventually vibrates his bowl water (often not that detectable by me - but he sure notices it!). The fist time I slammed my hand down on the counter in laughter at a joke, he zipped by in his bowl slamming himself in the sides three times before he came to a screeching halt and would not move (not even his tiny fins by his gills) for at least three minutes. I thought he may have killed himself. but he slowly began to move again, and in another minute he was swimming fine again! I was scared! My husband said he must have been in serious SHOCK!!! Nevertheless, he seems happy now; and he has loved eating betta pellets from day one!
