Being the Best Grandparent you can be.

Grandparents have the awesome ability to make amazing differences in children's lives by doing what comes naturally. My most precious memories of Childhood are about being at my Grandma's house. It helped shape who I am.

Grandparents are at a time in life when they have pretty much explored the "excitement" of life. They have had extensive experience with children, including making mistakes. Grandma and Grandpa can look at the big picture and in fun, subtle ways, bestow that knowledge and wisdom on the children. We are more "laid back" now, and the children sense that, they enjoy that.

Grandparents are part of the "Team". If the child has Mom and/or Dad, then they are in the team. Aunts, Uncles, other family members, often part of the team. Believe it or not...friends can be part of the team. You may be the Leader of the team (raising your Grandchildren), or you may be a helper and cheerleader (kids stay at your house weekends, etc.) No matter what position you hold on the team, you will have a profound impact on your Grandchildren.

Remember that as our Grandchildren grow, Our relationship with them changes. Teenagers aren't much into spending much time at the Grandparent's home. Enjoy the little ones while they still think Grandma's house is cool!

Grandparents don't give children what they didn't have, but what they DID have

Grandparent Fun

Parents strive to give their children the things they didn't have themselves. That is what Grandparnets did with their children. With the Grandchildren though, we try to share with them some of the things we DID have.

Grandparents let children explore. Children love to learn how to cook. Even if they just get to do the mixing and pouring, they love it!

Remember toys that weren't plastic? I'll bet you do, and think of how much your Grands would love to have some of the same things. I'll bet you thought some of them weren't even still around!

Crafting Kids love crafts. I can remember back in the day, here in Omaha, there used to be a "Craft Mobile" that would come around different neighborhoods and for a quarter, kids could make any of the many crafts they had offered. That Craft Mobile would be surrounded by kids! Now you can offer crafting to your Grandchild. There are many ways you could do this. You could introduce a craft you already know, such as Crochet, or Knitting, you could find out what interests your Grandchild and go from there. There are craft of the Month Clubs, such as Fun Craft of the Month Clubs
That is by Krafty Kids, and they also have a newsletter you can get which gives instructions for free crafts every month. You can sign up at the same link above. Down in the lower right corner is a newsletter sign up. They really have some cute things.

Pedal CarsDid any of you ever have pedal cars? I remember mine! Did you know you can STILL find Pedal Cars? Right here:

Is that too cool or what?

A Kid Friendly Home

Why Grandma's is the best!

Your home does not need to be a palace, it does not need to be spotless. Your home should be filled with a child friendly atmosphere. That doesn't mean letting them run wild. It means giving them things to do. You should not have to entertain your Grandchildren, you should teach them to entertain themselves.

A child friendly home also encourages children to take pride in their enviornment. Establishing a "guideline" of picking up after one activity before starting another is a good practice. Kids make messes, however, so understand and accept this. If you are able, it is a good idea to have a play room, or rec room for the kids to create and explore. This at least keeps the mess down to one room!

Every moment we spend with our Grandchildren is a future memory for them, and a basis upon which they will develop a "Grandparenting style". Remember the most important thing that makes a kid friendly home; Love of the Children.
