Working from Home with Special Needs Children

Discussions about how to cope with children with special needs and home businesses that are compatible with your situation.

Often when you have a child with issues such as self regulation and controlling their emotions it is best to stay at home to take care of them. This poses a challenge to many Moms because they cannot afford to lose the income.

Over the years of rearing my children I have learned how to manage this and both cater to their special needs and earn an income from home.

It is important that you realize that you are not alone and there are others like myself that would love to pass on what they know to help you. I love to network with new people and share ideas that have worked.

Explosive children while working from home

These days it seems to be more and more common to find other Mothers that have children with special needs. There are many challenges for parents whether it be ADD, ADHD or any of the several other issues that can affect our children.

My youngest has an issue with regulating her emotions and will explode for what appears to be no reason, but with our new training we are now starting to understand the best strategies for helping her learn to help herself solve this issue.

Recently while attending some workshops I have discovered a cognitive approach to helping my child develop. This approach uses the stress model of human behavior to deal with our special circumstances. This model states that children react either out of love or fear and it is our job to try to keep them in a love state as much as possible to help them develop healthily.

I highly recommend the books and materials from beyond consequences along with coping with an explosive child. These learning materials have clearly shown that the traditional consequences based treatment of behavior will not produce the desired results.

What I have found is after putting some structure in place along with changing my approach to these swings in mood, managing my youngster's emotions has been much easier. We have also incorporated things like therapeutic horse riding to help her learn tools to remain regulated.

While dealing with this situation I have been able to find an at home job that I can work several hours a day yet be responsive to my child's special needs

I look forward to talking to others about what has worked for them and their issues.

Special Needs Children Often Need Special Support

I attended a convention recently where a work from home Mom had a child with autism and she told her story. It reminded me of my situation and wanted to pass on some things I never considered.

This Mom needed to be a stay at home mom for more reasons than most of us do. Her child required her to provide more attention to him. Not only that she decided after research on the internet that the best treatment for her child to help him reach his full potential would require special training that costs $70,000 a year. Her husband had a great job but any family would have a hard time coming up with this kind of money, but on the other hand she wanted the best for her child.

She worked hard at her home business and managed to earn a secondary income surpassing this and as demonstrated her son had responded fantastically to the program he was in. Wow, this made me think that who wouldn't want to put in a little work to be in the position to provide the very best outcome for their son's special needs.

Special considerations when working from home

Working from home successfully has several considerations that are different for Moms with special needs children.

Here are some critical issues for parents in this situation:

  • Flexible work hours
  • Truly able to work from home
  • Abel to continue to spend quality time with children

I have been able to work from home and keep the often demanding schedule necessary with my daughter's schedule and needs.

I learned the hard way that in my case unfortunately traditional 9-5 type jobs and many party plan type businesses are not compatible with my little one's needs.
