Beyond The Blackboard: A Hallmark Movie About Teaching Homeless Children

Hallmark Hall of Fame's Beyond the Blackboard (which was previously titled Let Them Shine) aired last night, April 24, 2011, and I and no doubt millions of other people enjoyed it. Starring Emily VanCamp, Timothy Busfield and Treat Williams, it follows a true story from a book titled Nobody Don't Love Nobody by Stacey Bess.

Set in 1987 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Beyond the Blackboard tells the story a brand-new teacher and Mom who is given a tougher than expected teaching job and winds up teaching homeless CHILDREN in a school that is housed in a single room in a dilapidated warehouse and called THE SCHOOL WITH NO NAME. She has some personal prejudicial hurdles to cross before she is able to be a true teacher for these children and of course there are unexpected hurdles like the facts that this school has no desks, books or supplies.

Hallmark movie fans who do NOT have the Hallmark Channel were lucky because Beyond the Blackboard premiered as Hallmark's 243rd presentation on CBS rather than Hallmark's own channel. Meaning those without the specialty channel could tune in and watch. However, if you missed watching it on CBS and are now wondering where and when you will be able to watch it or you simply enjoyed it so much that you want to own it, I am pleased to tell you that you can already buy a copy on DVD. On this page, you can watch the movie trailer, learn more about Beyond the Blackboard and even order a copy of the movie, if you like.

Beyond The Blackboard Information and Movie Trailer

The story of Beyond the Blackboard is an inspiring one and actress Emily VanCamp said that she was compelled to take the role, that she was surprised at how she connected with the script and that she really admires Stacey for what she did at the school. "I love the combination Miss Bess has of vulnerability and empathy, matched with tremendous strength."

Stacey Bess visited the set in New Mexico and reminisced that her chances of surviving at the school were near zero at the beginning, particularly since she had never experienced poverty before. However, she went on and helped children at that school for many years. Her job was not easy, she had to teach them that you could trust adults and that you were there and would continue to be there for them. She also said she had to teach them HOW to be children and that they should not have to worry about money. She feels that it did not take a lot to make a difference -- just some basic school equipment and some love.

Ms. Bess does not think that people should be afraid to venture outside of their comfort zones and said, "Even the smallest gesture can make the biggest difference in another person's life."

The first video that appears here is the short movie trailer; the second, a more detailed look at the film which serves as an introduction to the movie and to the story behind it.

Beyond the Blackboard is Hallmark Hall of Fame's 243rd presentation.

Does the story Beyond the Blackboard reach out to you?

The real woman on whom this film is based was reluctant at first to see the movie made but then she thought, "if it will teach one person to reach out to kids, it will be worth it." What do you think of her story? Will it help others to be more caring and to reach out?

Well, most Hallmark movies are inspiring, so I do see this as one that will do just that--be inspiring. And children need all of the care we can give them, so I hope it helps many, many folks to reach out. Showing it on CBS is quite a nice idea. Just because there's now a Hallmark channel doesn't mean they should quit serving the audience they built on that may not be able to get or afford Hallmark. Glad they chose to do that.
