Ivena's new book is now available ... Beyond Land's End

How much do we really know about our early Australian history and our ancestors? Australians are increasingly curious about what has gone before, as shown by the influx of television programs such as Who Do You Think You Are? and the prevalence of history tracing websites. New generations of Australians are spending thousands of dollars tracing a history that is foreign and unknown to them.

Beyond Land's End is the true story of unswerving faith spanning three generations of Australian women who have withstood the unbridled oceans of their lives.

"The year was 1875. My grandmother, Jane Bolitho Reed, aged sixteen years, stood at Land's End gazing at the rocky coastline. Intrigued by the might of the relentless Atlantic Ocean displaying its power, and enthralled by the stunning natural beauty of the cliff face standing majestically against the constant force of the mighty waves. She yearned to know what lay behind the far horizon where the sea and sky joined. It was as though an invisible forces was beckoning her forward to destiny. A destiny that would require stamina like the cliff face to withstand the unbridled oceans of life."

From the Author's Heart

backcover 2

Twenty-five years ago, the concept of this book was lodged in my heart. Overwhelmed, I ignored it. However, three years ago, an urgency indefinable filled my consciousness. Thoughts began to play havoc with my mind. Where to start? Do I really think anybody would be interested
in an ordinary family like mine?

That is when I remembered two Bible stories that impressed me as a child - Ruth and, of course, Esther. Their message rings clear down the ages and long into the future.

"What you do counts. It makes you who you are and where you will end up."

Most people battle with feelings of insignificance but here are two examples of amazing women who came from the humblest of circumstances and created history by simply being their unassuming selves.

I hear every other day the preoccupation of people in their pursuit of instant happiness, expressing exasperation in their inability to find it.

I hear what it is to be the perfect man or woman, and how difficult they are to find. You know the type; they look elegant and comply with every whim without question. The "I'm right, you're wrong!" concept.

Ruth and Esther both served others whole heartedly. Herein they demonstrated an integral character that systematically placed them in their defining sequence of time and life. As a result, they explored the depths of human relationships and forged marriages covenanted in love, respect, and longevity. Their seemingly insignificant contribution affected the lives of countless people to this very day.

Never forget, it is not your similarity to others that is your strength and personal value - it is your differences. Self esteem and a sense of accomplishment flows from acting confidently upon your intuitive instinct and ability, however humble it may be.

I have clarified my thoughts. I have drawn courage from Ruth and Esther. Now I put pen to paper and contribute my part to posterity.

I know that "To ignore history is to repeat it."
I have realized that the smallest thoughtful word or deed can encourage and serve another in finding their rightful place in life. I write, hopeful that as you read and turn the pages of this book, you will be
inspired and encouraged along life's path."

Comments on Beyond Land's End

Dear Ivena,

Thank you for the privilege of reading the manuscript of your book 'Beyond Land's End'.

Having written my autobiography over a period of four years, I can understand the time, the stress and the absolute need to tell the story of the life of your family. It is a wonderful thing to do - it brings them all back to life - and never to be forgotten.

We need to know the history of our forbears, where they came from and the hardships they endured. They created the foundation of Australia and we must keep our history alive.

You write very well. I could picture all the times and places about which you write. I remember being part of the era of Sydney when people danced at the Trocadero.

Thank you for keeping the early days of Sydney and the countryside of New South Wales in our minds.

When I read of your despair for your son Paul in regard to his excessive drinking and smoking, mixing with the wrong people and turning his back on the church then in the quiet of the night hearing a quiet voice saying, "for where I am leading him, he has to experience these things", reminded me of the many times my Australian friends Sally and Malcolm Begbie, who founded the wonderful charity Crossroads International in Hong Kong have said to me: "It is very often the most difficult and head strong children who become the best leaders".

Loving parents as you say, steer their children through their trials and tribulations. Your family motto is so important - never too busy to stop and listen when your children come to you with their problems, let them know you love them, and that they are important to you.

I so much admire your faith and believe, too, without faith we are empty, with Jesus in our heart we will never walk alone.

And then Ivena, I came to your last page, and to my amazement, read of your visit to the old abandoned tin mines in Redruth, Cornwall where your great grandfather worked as a miner - and so did my great grandfather - they would have known each other. My great grandfather came to Australia when the tin ran out - amazing.

The Lord works in mysterious and wonderful ways.

With my warmest wishes

June Dally-Watkins

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about our family history - stories and events that otherwise would be lost if not recorded. I laughed and cried throughout your book and was completely blessed at how those three women of faith persevered throughout despite what challenges came their way! It encourages me to hold onto God to see me through my own challenges. A.V.
