Modernism in Wildlife Art

Within the wildlife art community there is a small, but growing sub-community of people who are not interested in being limited to a photorealistic style. These artists are my inspiration, combining elements of the everything from expressionism to fauvism in an effort to create something beyond what the eye or the camera lens perceives.

I used to work pushing pixels all day (doing Flash, editing and compressing video, working on websites), so when I returned to painting after 15 years it was to recover my "primitive side". Previously I'd worked as a comic book artist and professional illustrator striving for the required level of stylistic realism, so I've rebelled against that as well since returning to painting.

My style is freeing in all the ways that technology is confining. There is the roaring aroma of the paint and thinner, the tom-tom of my tools lending a heartbeat to the work, the visual stimulus of the piece itself, and the viscosity of the paint and pigment as it rolls through my fingers onto the canvas. By the time I'm done layering color wet into wet, my arms and shoulders will ache.

It is visceral, passionate, primal, and almost antediluvian. I make a huge mess, and I love every minute of it.

My Stuff and More

Here are some artists along with myself who are pushing the envelope on realism when it comes to rendering animals.
My Website
You can browse more of my originals and buy posters, prints, postcards and more.
Clifford the Big Read Blog
My blog. Here you'll find the weekly easel check and updates on shows, tips for painting, preparing to paint and selling your work.
Terry Lee
Probably my favorite fauvist wildlife artist. His use of intense colors and broad strokes is what I aspire to.
Debbie Edgers Sturges
Another of my favorite of the new modernists. Once again you'll see rich shadows and intense colors mix to create a unique style.
Bears: Polar Bear, Grizzly Bear, Panda, Kodiak
Another Squidoo Lens, this one about bears. Cliff like bears.
Panda 101
Scientists used to think Pandas weren't bears at all, but relatives of the raccoon, turns out DNA proves them wrong. I guess the should have kept the original name, "Bamboo Bears" , after all.
Learn About Bears
Another lens about bears.
Are You Polar Bear Aware?
The purpose of this lens is to raise money to help save Polar Bears from extinction while helping more people become Polar Bear Aware.
Sculptures by Frankie
Most of the sculptures are original one-of-a-kind works of art and she donates 10% of all wildlife art sales to the National Wildlife Federation.
