A New Technology for Bible Study

eBook versions of the Bible are great for Bible study. You're able to use the technology of eBooks to search for phrases instead of flipping through pages to hunt for what you're looking for. You can digitally highlight important passages without having to make marks on actual paper. You can also add bookmarks and zoom in on the text. Plus, eBook Bibles have the same benefits as other eBooks, in that you can carry many eBooks with you on a single device without having to lug around heavy books. I don't think that Bible eBooks will replace the traditional Bible, but they're a great option, especially for Bible study.

King James Version Bible eBook

King James Version Bible eBookSome History About the KJV Bible

In 1604, the newly crowned King James I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference. That gathering proposed a new English version in response to the perceived problems of earlier translations as detected by the Puritan faction of the Church of England. King James authorized a new translation of the Bible into English be started. It was finished in 1611.

The task of translation was undertaken by 47 scholars, all were members of the Church of England. This Authorized Version, or King James Version, was translated primarily from Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic texts. A primary concern of the translators was to produce a Bible that would be appropriate, dignified and resonant in public reading. Hence, in a period of rapid linguistic change, they avoided contemporary idioms, tending instead towards forms that were already slightly archaic.

The King James version quickly became the standard for English-speaking Protestants. Its flowing language and prose rhythm has had a profound influence on the literature of the past 300 years. The King James Bible is the most familiar and widely read Bible translation in the world, recognized for centuries as both a religious and literary classic.

The invention of the printing press made the Bible universally available, and now the technology of eBooks once again makes the Bible more usable than ever before. The King James Bible in eBook format can be searched, bookmarked, highlighted, and printed at will, making it an excellent academic resource, and also very accessible for everyday use.

New Living Translation Bible eBook

NLT Bible eBookSome History About the NLT Bible

The New Living Translation is a translation of the Bible into a more understandable and readable form for speakers of modern English. It is a translation that seeks to communicate the meaning and content of the original biblical text in language that English readers will readily understand. The challenge for the translators was to create a text that would make the same impact in the life of modern readers that the original text had for the original readers. In the New Living Translation, this is accomplished by translating entire thoughts (rather than just words) into natural, everyday English.

The New Living Translation was designed to render the meaning of the original texts with power and clarity. Vocabulary was carefully chosen to reflect modern English. The translators have sought to create a translation that bridges the gap between the ancient world and modern readers of English.

The Old Testament translation was based on the Masoretic Text (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) and was further compared to other sources such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Septuagint, Greek manuscripts, Samaritan Pentateuch, Syriac Peshitta, and Latin Vulgate. The New Testament translation was based on the two standard editions of the Greek New Testament (the UBS 4th revised edition and the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece 27th edition).

Young's Literal Translation of the Holy Bible eBook

Young's Translation Bible eBookYoung's Literal Translation is a translation of the Bible into English that was published in 1862. The translation was made by Robert Young, the compiler of Young's Analytical Concordance to the Bible and Concise Critical Comments on the New Testament. Young produced a "Revised Version" of the translation in 1887. After he died, the publisher released a new Revised Edition in 1898.

A literal translation is unusual in that it is a strictly literal translation of the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Bible. This makes the translation much closer to the original languages, and therefore possibly more accurate, but it can also be more difficult to read for the modern person.
