Gustave Dore's Dramatic Illustrations

Creation Of Light

Paul Gustave Dore was born January 6,1832 in Strasbourg, France. He was most known for being an illustrator and his illustrations were dramatic and creative. He was also a painter and sculptor.

When I look at his illustrations they evoke a feeling of being there for me. I look at Bible stories in a new way when I picture the scenes from the Bible through his eyes. They are beautiful, and yet there is a realistic, solemn quality to his works that few can match.

He did Illustrations for about 120 books and many are still admired today.

He illustrated The English Bible which was very successful in 1866. This led to a large exhibition of his work in 1867 in London. From there he founded the Dore Gallery in 1869.

The Last Supper

Dore's vision of The Last Supper has always been one of my favorites. Simple black and white and yet with such detail that for me it seems to bring about a sense of the reality of it.
