Although I see nothing in the introductions and notes that should be alarming to the book's primary audience (Evangelical Christians), the NIVSB now seems worthy to be used by Christians from other Protestant traditions, as well as by the general reader who may be curious about the Bible as one of the most important texts of Western civilization.
The NIVSB continues to use three "icons" with its introductions, charts, and notes: a "seedling" to suggest an item that will help the reader apply something to her/his personal life; a "trowel" to identify items based on archaeological discoveries; and "a human head" to call attention to items relating to key characters.

The HarperCollins Study Bible: Fully Revised & Updated
The fundamental strengths of the first HCSB remain: up-to-date introductions to the biblical books, based on the latest critical scholarship, by leading experts in the field; concise notes, clearly explaining names, dates, places, obscure terms, and other difficulties in reading the biblical text; careful analysis of the structure of biblical books; abundant maps, tables, and charts to enable the reader to understand the context of the Bible, and to see the relationship among its parts.
But, in this new revised edition, every introduction, essay, map, illustration and explanatory note has been reviewed and updated, and new material added. For instance, there are newly commissioned introductory essays on the archaeology of ancient Israel and the New Testament world, the religion of ancient Israel, the social and historical context of each book of the Bible, and on biblical interpretation. There are completely new introductions and notes for many of the books in the Bible, plus a full revision and updating of all others. Of special interest are the literary history of the Pentateuch (those books between the Old and New Testament that Catholics include in their Bible); more references to ancient non-biblical sources which seem to parallel books in the Bible like the Gnostic gospels uncovered in Egypt or the famous scrolls found near the Dead Sea in Israel, and more comprehensive attention to the interrelationship of Old and New Testaments.

Holy Bible: New American Standard Version, Audio Bible CD's
58 CD's with the NASB Bible
58 high quality CDs have been digitally remastered in stereo for enhanced listening enjoyment. This fresh reading by master narrator Stephen Johnston of the whole NASB includes helpful and informative introductions for each book of the Bible.
The CDs come packaged in their own top-quality carrying case, providing a handy way to protect and organize these treasures for years to come. (Shipping Weight: 2.8 pounds)
Holy Bible: New American Standard Version, Audio Bible
Good points:
1) It is the NASB.
2) No drama, just a man speaking the Word of God
3) Sturdy case to hold all those CDs
4) Low cost in comparison to other CDs
5) Clear pronunciation
6) No defects in any of the CDs
7) Both the Old and New Testaments on CDs
8) If you lose or damage a CD, you can get a replacement for a modest shipping charge.
Bad point:
There are introductions to each book, and these introductions are not the Word of God. Unfortunately, those introductions (as with any Bible commentary) will influence your understanding in a negative way if you listen to them. When a book of the Bible begins, I press the "move to the next track" button on my CD player in order to avoid listening to the introduction. I recommend you do the same.
If you Google the narrator's name (Stephen Johnston), then you should be able to find some audio samples, so you can listen to him before you purchase this item. I did.
I listen to these CDs while driving, and sometimes at home. What a blessing. Praise God.

Through the Bible in One Year: A 52-Lesson Introduction to the 66 Books of the Bible
You'll learn how to analyze all 66 books, which are the most significant chapters, where to find the central purpose, which chief verses to copy and remember, all of which prepare you to meet life's daily challenges.
Through the Bible in One Year. Alan B. Stringfellow's rigorous Bible study is one of the few I've seen that takes you through the Bible starting at page one and reading through to the end. It has outlines, central themes, and study questions for each book of the Bible. It is designed to take you through the old testament the first 6 months and the new testament the remaining 6 months. This gives you much more emphasis on the new testament. The old testament sudies are designed to let you see how it points to Jesus Christ. The text of the Bible is not contained in this study making this a lot of study for your money. Excellent Bible study! -- Deacon Bill, St. Louis, MO, U.S.A.
I am currently using this to help me read through the Bible for the first time. I am finding it very helpful in putting information into perspecitive in an easy to understand format. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to dive into an entire bible study on their own or with others. -- C. Leone, Michigan, USA

How to Study the Bible for Yourself
Bestselling author Tim LaHaye is a nationally recognized Bible teacher who wants each reader to know that the Bible was written for them-they need not rely on scholars and teachers to interpret it. In this 30th anniversary edition of his bestselling How to Study the Bible for Yourself(more than 850,000 copies sold) readers will discover how to-
- locate the Bible's major principles, promises, and commands
- understand key verses and themes
- achieve an enriching, lifelong habit of Bible study
LaHaye's practical and inspiring method of study will open up the joy, wisdom, and excitement of the Bible to those who have been studying for years or anyone beginning to explore the wonders of God's Word.
Though a believer all my life, I've recently returned to a more active Christian life (reading Mr. LaHaye's "Left Behind" series can do that to you). As a person who normally reads books from the beginning to the end, I had found Genesis overwhelming once you got to the "begats" and I often quit reading. Mr LaHaye has written a wonderful and easy-to-read book with a 3 year guide to reading the whole Bible. The name "Christian" comes from Christ, so he suggests the reading of the Bible to start in the New Testament where we get better grounded in the Life of Jesus. Starting in the Books of John is so enriching. With suggestions for both reading order, and different ways to do Bible study as well, Mr LaHaye's approach to getting the most out of the Bible is saving grace. I would recommend this Bible reading guide to all, whether new, newly returned, or mature in their faith. It makes Bible study enriching and life-asserting. -- "shawsie" London, Ontario Canada

How to Study Your Bible: The Lasting Rewards of the Inductive Method
More than 400,000 adults and teens have discovered the truth of God's Word for themselves through Kay's inductive study tools. Now this dynamic guide has been updated to reflect the most recent edition of the NASB and sports a fresh new cover. How to Study Your Bible helps people cultivate the skills of observation, interpretation, and application-and encourages them to become active participants in God's Word!
In 15 easy-to-understand chapters, bestselling author Kay Arthur presents a systematic approach that includes key words, context studies, comparisons and contrasts, topical studies, word meanings, and more. Interacting with God's Word helps readers absorb more of its messages and gives God greater access to engrave His truth on their hearts and minds.
---
Just a few months ago I came to the sudden and perhaps not-so-startling realization that although I have been reading the Bible for more than twenty years I had never really been taught how to study it. I have been told of the importance of spending time each day reading God's Word, meditating on it and even memorizing it, but I do not ever recall being taught how to systematically study it.
After explaining this predicament to a friend of mine, she recommended the inductive Bible study approach, which she had only just discovered through buying the New Inductive Study Bible. Kay Arthur edited that version of the Bible and knowing she was a proponent of the inductive method, I decided to read How To Study Your Bible by Arthur.
I do not intend to go into detail about the Inductive method of Bible study. There is any number of resources available in bookstores and online that can outline the method in detail. Essentially, though, it begins with understanding the context of the big picture (the Bible) then works to the smaller picture (a specific book of the Bible) and so on until the study leads to specific words. The method relies heavily on note-taking and Bible marking. There is a whole system of Bible marking that Arthur recommends which helps in identifying themes and patterns. The appendices are filled with useful information about how to best use concordances and expository dictionaries. They even go into some detail about the tenses, moods and voices of Greek verbs!
Although the book sometimes appears as an advertisement for the New Inductive Study Bible, it does a fantastic job of outlining the method and rationale for the inductive approach to Bible study. This book is a valuable resource and I highly recommend it. -- Tim Challies,Oakville, Ontario, Canada

Scripture Workbook: For Personal Bible Study and Teaching the Bible
This book contains twenty-two individual "Scripture Studies." Each study focuses on one general area of study. These studies enable individuals to do in-depth, topical studies of the Bible. They are also invaluable to the Bible study teacher preparing lessons for Sunday School or a home Bible study. They can be used for group studies as well.
The range of topics covered in the different studies is broad, from what the Bible teaches about itself, to what the Bible teaches about divorce and remarriage. Included in each study are hundreds of Scripture references. So there will be no lack of material from which to begin your studies.
So if you're an individual looking for an aid to improve for your own personal Bible studies, or a Bible study teacher or home group leader looking for help in preparing lessons, this book will be of great benefit.
The sources for the viewpoints promoted in these Scripture Studies are wide and varied. The ideas are taken from commentaries, study Bibles, theology books, books of various kinds, and most importantly, this writer's own personal study of the Scriptures.
The sources for the opposing views presented are publications of groups that promote the ideas and personal conversations that I have had with members of such groups and adherents to the views.
It is my hope and prayer that God uses these Scripture Studies to help the reader to: "... grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen" (2 Pet 3:18).
---------
An excellent study guide on the topics covered. This is however a WORK-book; if you like to be spoon fed your theology, this book may not be to your liking. To use it, you will need your bible, a notepad, and some time, but it's well worth the effort. In the end, I not only learned about the material explicitly covered, but I think I also improved my bible study habits.
On each of the topics covered, the book leads you through the pertinent sections of the bible (by references - you have to look them up yourself), comparing scripture with scripture. Mr. Zeolla shows great restraint in simply laying out the evidence and letting the bible speak for its self.
On several topics he also presents the arguments for some, umm, 'heterodox' positions, and does so fairly enough that we can see how someone could reach such (incorrect) conclusions, how we know they are wrong, and how we can avoid making such mistakes our selves. This is much more helpful than simply giving the orthodox position and pointing out that others are wrong.
I originally got this book to use an early chapter ("Scripture on Scripture") to prepare for a small group study on the bible, and was not disappointed. It was several months later that I got around to working through the rest of the book, and was impressed by the presentation. I especially appreciate the two-chapter study on the Trinity, a doctrine to which I must admit I had never previously paid enough attention. -- S. McNabb, NorthEast, USA

Not like the MacArthur Study Bible
Those who say that it is the same as the MSB have not noted carefully the significant changes and revisions.
"Unleashing God's truth, one verse at a time" has been the motto of John MacArthur's fruitful and enduring ministry of preaching. Out of the overflow of his pulpit ministry have come many books that have shaped and transformed the way believers think about the church, the gospel, and Christ. A milestone of this ministry came in 1997 with the publishing of The MacArthur Study Bible (hereafter, MSB). The MacArthur Bible Commentary (hereafter, MBC) seeks to build upon the foundational work of the MSB and greatly expands its usefulness for hungry Bible students.
This one-volume commentary stands in a long line of many other similar resources that have proved useful to Christians over the centuries. Making use of current scholarship and other reference resources this volume brings together a weight of helpful material and biblical insight. The MBC doubles the roughly 350 charts and diagrams of the MSB to almost 700 total. In addition the commentary material has been significantly revised and corrected in numerous places. Certain new features that did not appear in the MSB like "word-studies" and "further study" sections are new to this work. I believe it is a significant improvement over the MSB, especially for those who may not prefer NKJV that accompanies the MSB (although it has been rumored that the MSB will soon be wed to translations other than the NKJV).
Overview and strengths: The overall structure of the MBC is user-friendly. The outline of each Bible book not only appears at the beginning of each book but is integrated throughout the text of the commentary. In addition to the many new charts, word-studies, and diagrams a section called "Further Study" appears at the end of each book of the Bible. The "further study" section is a brief list of helpful commentaries generally of a non-technical expositional flavor. The "Overview of Theology" that formerly appeared at the end of the MSB is moved to the front matter of the MBC and renamed "Key Teachings of the Bible."
Probably the most significant addition is the many abbreviated articles that appear throughout the commentary. These articles should prove to be of great practical help to the student, counselor, parent, or pastor. One will find in these articles brief but insightful counsel from the Word of God on such things as giving (p.1640), the will of God (p. 1761), hope (pp. 1958, 1628), love (pp. 1961, 1598, 1829), suffering (p.1920), and Bible study (pp. xx-xxiv). Even for the eschatologically curious one will find a brief discussion of the meaning of "666" (p.2020).
Theological nuances are not left out of the MBC. The theological persuasion found in its pages is decidedly credobaptist (see note on Acts 2:38); pretribulational (p.2006); and premillennial (see note on Rev. 20:2). One will also find helpful notes on particular redemption (see note on 1 John 2:2); unconditional individual election (see note on Eph. 1:11), and the relationship between Israel and the Church within a New Covenant context (see notes on Jeremiah 31:31-34). There are many theological avenues to explore in this grand volume.
Weaknesses: It is a tribute to MacArthur, the many fine editors, assistants, and professors who have labored long hours to see that the finished product is relatively clear of typos and publishing mistakes. In a work of this magnitude one can reasonably understand certain items being overlooked. However, a few things might not go unnoticed. In regards to quality, some of the pictures were inferior (p.1776) and the gray-scale in others appeared blurred (p. 921). Some typos appear to be formatting issues (e.g., the misplaced hyphen in "Corinth-ians'," p.1613) and other simple spelling mistakes ("Hord" instead of "Word," see comment on Ps. 19:1-14, p. 609). However, such mistakes appear so infrequently that one should not be bothered by their inclusion. The many strengths of this commentary far outweigh any weaknesses (whether perceived or real).
The MacArthur Bible Commentary should find wide usage within the body of Christ. Pastors, counselors, parents, and students will all benefit by the years of wisdom and Biblical insight that have accumulated and found residence within this single volume. I recommend it to all without hesitation and in hopes that believers will be rekindled in their passion for the study of God and His Word. -- Paul Lamey, Alabama, USA

An excellent, God-honoring resource!
As a Sunday School teacher I was looking for a solid reference book from which I could base my lessons on and also do my personal devotions and study. I found just what I wanted with the Believer's Bible Commentary. It is packed with many articles on various topics including elders, divorce and remarriage, the concepts of the N.T. church, sin, the law, baptism, election, and much, much more. The summary article following the book of Acts is a must-read. There is a good amount of maps and tables depicting various themes. The author quotes from many other Christian writers so you are not getting the musings of just one man. The endnotes at the end of each bible book contain more details on certain verses and a bibliography for that book of the bible. There is a nice section of supplements at the end of the entire volume as well as a complete bibliography. MacDonald's writing is detailed, devotional and thought provoking. The editor notes that there is "a serious interaction with the details of the text... with no dodging of difficult passages or convicting applications." This is a commentary, systematic theology, general bible handbook, and practical guide all rolled into one package. And of course, the entire work speaks to the centrality of Jesus Christ in our lives. As the introduction reads, the aim of the Believer's Bible Commentary "is to help produce, not merely garden-variety, lowest-common-denominator Christians, but "disciples."" This central theme is expounded on time and again throughout the commentary. This is an excellent, God-honoring resource that I absolutely love. -- D.W. Kittrell, Vista, CA, United States

Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible
This is the only complete and unabridged one-volume edition of Matthew Henry's famous work.
Now, this classic volume has been re-typset and features a slimmer and handier trim size and an attractive new cover.
"First among the mighty (commentaries) for general usefulness we are bound to mention the man whose name is a household word, Matthew Henry. He is the most pious and pithy, sound and sensible, suggestive and sober, terse and trustworthy . . . he is deeply spiritual, heavenly, profitable; finding good matter in every text, and from all deducting the most practical and judicious lessons . . . It is the Christian's companion, suitable to everybody, instructive to all."
--Charles H. Spurgeon
From Genesis to Revelation, Matthew Henry successfully combines practical application, devotional insight, and scholarship on the entire Bible. Henry has profound insights on the content, message and nature of God's divine revelation. Perfect for all readers of the Bible who want a convenient, comprehensive commentary.
- Includes the entire text of Matthew Henry's original multi-volume commentary
- Modern easy-to-read type makes it portable, attractive and affordable
----------
Superb Commentary of God's Word
This commentary is exhaustive in its look at Scripture and takes on many issues and many points that commentaries usually do not delve into. And, Henry typically deals with these topics very well. There have been many advances in historical and cultural knowledge regarding the Biblical times since Henry wrote this and the text can be hard to read at times. But, with this said, I absolutely recommend that every Christian has this commentary set, simply because few commentaries have such depth and breadth as Henry's. There are a few commentary sets that are better and up-to-date (Gaebelein's Expositor's Commentaries (OT and NT= 13 Vol)), but to start a library, one can not do better than to start with Henry's works. They will help guide you in your search for Christ-like behavior. As with all commentaries though, know that none is perfect and study accordingly. -- David C. The Bible Knowledge Commentary: An Exposition of the Scriptures by Dallas Seminary Faculty [New Testament Edition]
- What does That verse mean?
- How should I interpret this passage?
- What is the significance of this word or phrase in Hebrew or Aramaic?
- How do Bible-time customs help me understand the meaning of this passage?

The Bible Knowledge Commentary answers these and other questions about the Scriptures, discussing all the Bible verse by verse and often phrase by phrase. In addition, maps, charts, and diagrams help you grasp the meanings of the biblical text. Unlike most others this commentary is by authors from one school - Dallas Theological Seminary. very good and comprehensive with a dispensationalist slant
the reader may well recognize the authors as professors at dallas theological seminary; walvoord has written multiple books and is considered one of the foremost dispensationalist theologians today (perhaps carrying the torch of chafer). this is a 2 volums set which covers the entire bible, although not in great detail. it is definitely written from an evangelical point of view - that is, the inspiration and inerrancy of the bible is at the foundation of all interpretation (contrast this with the new jerome commentary which is purely historical-critical). nonetheless, this work is the product of sound scholarship and the work of men with expansive knowledge and insight. this is ideal for sunday school classes and personal study; it might be a little thin for use in theology classes. -- Charles E. Great commentary! Used it for years!
I can't help but review this commentary. It has been a friend to my study for several years. I like the fact it gives enough information to whet my appetite to continue to study deeper. It gives me enough of the Hebrew and Greek for clarity but doesn't tell me exactly what to think. The long and short of it is that this book encourages the one studying and leaves room for the Holy Spirit to do His work. - C. Taylor
An easy to read and still exhausting companion
Since I wanted to have an intensive study companion which is like a summary of all the best bible commentaries, this was the book of my choice. It is a wonderful book and a great introduction to the contemporary thoughts of scholars about the bible. -- Long Nguyen, USA
Nice one book commentary
This is a nice commentary that won't break the bank. I have found others that go into more detial, but they are multi-book commentaries and as such have an increased cost. Yet for a one book commentary, you will find this very handy and easy to use with some nice insight on the scriptures. -- R. Myers
