Bible Study Fellowship International News | BSF Locations and Classes

Bible Study Fellowship (BSF) is a nonprofit international Christian interdenominational or parachurch fellowship of lay people offering a system of structured bible study. It was begun in 1959 by Audrey Wetherell Johnson, a British evangelist to China.

About Bible Study Fellowship | BSF

The BSF system of Bible study is highly organized and disciplined, and uses the technique of exegesis for expository study of the scriptures. BSF holds classes for men, women, children and young adults in 35 countries (2006). There are over 1000 classes worldwide. Classes for men and women are segregated, the exception being young adults where males and females are allowed to mix. Children's classes are also unsegregated. Each study lasts for approximately nine months, and over a seven-year cycle BSF classes cover Genesis, Romans, Matthew, Life of Moses, John, Israel and the Minor Prophets, and Acts of the Apostles.

The BSF system involves four elements; daily questions to encourage personal Bible study, discussion groups (of up to 15 people) for sharing of personal answers to questions, a lecture by the class Teaching Leader covering the past week's scripture with applications for daily living, and finally a set of notes reinforcing lessons from the previous week (plus a new set of questions for the week ahead). BSF classes and materials are provided free of charge.

Often the Teaching Leader and the notes will present historical details obtained from external sources, as an aid to clearer understanding of the context and background of the scripture being studied.

Discussion groups are led by Discussion Leaders, who are specifically directed to avoid any formal teaching role (this being left to the Holy Spirit during member's personal quiet times during the week, and the Teaching Leader in his/her lecture). Discussion Leaders facilitate the discussions, and also perform a shepherding role with group members. They attend a separate two-hour training session each week, which involves an initial pass through the week's questions and answers, and generally a sharing of homiletics (see links below) on the passage being studied.

History of Bible Study Fellowship | BSF

BSF grew out of a program of structured Bible study that A. Wetherell Johnson agreed to run for a group of friends in California in 1952. The system of structured weekly study, including the weekly questions and notes that Miss Johnson prepared for her friends, formed the basis of BSF today. BSF itself began in 1959. Miss Johnson was initially a missionary with China Inland Mission. Her autobiography is in the book "Created for Commitment". Born in 1907, she died in 1984. In Australia, BSF spawned a very popular and less-intense program of Bible study called Know Your Bible or KYB. The first teaching leader in Australia, Jean Raddon, recognised a need in Australia for a structured Bible study that could be run over a shorter time and with smaller groups than the BSF program. The KYB study is run under the auspices of Christian Women Communicating International (CWCI). Bible Study Fellowship (BSF)

BSF has been a blessing to me.This is my sixth year and I am already looking forward to the study of John next year. My son who is 15 has gone to the Children's Program for the last 6 years also. He loves it! I encourage all who have children to do this indepth study to know GOD in a more personal way! The wonderful thing about this study is that you and your child read and study the same passages. What better way to spend your time----studying GOD'S WORD with your child! Train up your child in the way he should go..........GOD BLESS YOU

BSF has been the most helpful spirituial experience I've had in a long time. It has been a rock for me during very trying and emotional times. The course on the life of Moses gave me more inspiration as I could relate to the problems that Moses faced as he worked with the people in the wilderness. My family seemed like those people during my trying time and God spoke to me through the messages he gave to Mosed. God bless everybody at BSF .

A PAKISTANI MUSLIM COMES FACE TO FACE WITH JESUS CHRIST
Khalid Mansoor Soomro is from the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. He was an ardent follower of Mohammed until the results of a challenge he laid out before some Christian students. Please read this powerful testimony of how this man was converted to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior! And He said unto them: "Go into the world, and preach the gospel to every Creature." (Mark 16:15)
When I was 14 years old I was studying in a convent school at Sadder Karachi Pakistan. I belong to a Muslim family.
My parents forced me to learn the Qur'an by heart when I was seven and so I did. I had a lot of Christian fellows (or acquaintances) at school. I was surprised to see them studying while I always found Christians of low profile in the society. I discussed and argued a lot with them about the accuracy of Qur'an and rejection of Bible by Allah in Holy Qur'an. I always forced them to accept Islam. Often my Christian teacher told me not to do so. He said, "God may choose you as he chose the Apostle Paulus." I asked them who Paulus is, I know Muhammad only. One day during our discussion I challenged them to burn the Holy Books of each other. They should burn the Qur'an and I should do the same with the Bible. We agreed: "The book which would burn would be false. The book, which would not burn, has the Truth in it. God Himself would save His Word." Unfortunately they were not ready to do this because they were frightened. Living in an Islamic Country and doing such a thing could lead them to face the law and meet its consequences. I told them I could do this by myself.
First I set the Qur'an on fire and it got burnt before our eyes. Then I tried to do the same with the Bible. As soon as I tried it, the Bible struck my chest and I fell on the ground. There was smoke all around my body. I was burning, but from a spiritual fire. Suddenly I saw a man with golden hair, wrapped in light on my side. He placed his hand on my head and said to me "You are my son and from now on you will preach the Gospel in your nation. Go! Your Lord is with you."
Then I saw the stone on the grave, which was removed. Mariam Magdalene spoke to the gardener who probably took the body of my Lord. The gardener was Jesus Himself. He kissed the hand of Mariam and I woke up. I felt very strong as if when someone would strike me, I could not be hurt.
I went home and I told my parents about all what happened. But they did not believe it. They thought that the Christians got me under magic, but I told them that all this happened before my very own eyes and that many people were watching this. They still did not believe and they turned me out of my home and refused to accept me as their family member. I went to a Church close to my home; I told the Father there all about what happened. I asked him to show me the Bible. He gave me one and I read about the event of Mariam Magdalene and I accepted Jesus Christ as my Savior on 02-17-85.
My Family refused to accept me. I went to various churches and got more knowledge about the Word of God. I also followed many Bible Courses and then I got a ministry. Now after 21 years, I have seen many people come to the Lord and accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Thanks to the Lord, I am now married and have a Christian family. Me and my wife Khalida are involved in the work of the Lord and able to share the miracles God has been doing in our lives.
Even though it is not easy and we face many hardships, we feel like Paul who went through hardships and suffering for the Glory of His Savior, who went Himself through suffering during His walk on earth and on the cross. We thank God the Father for sending His Son to this earth and giving us free life through Him. We thank God for His Spirit who encourages us day by day to live for Him

I'd not heard of BSF and I learned a new word "exegesis". It's a good day when one learns something new! Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might...........
