A brief history of the Bichon Frise 

Hailing from the Mediterranean, the Bichon Frise descended from the line of Barbet or Water Spaniel breeds, which were then divided into four different categories, including the Bichon Maltais. Since the dog carried such a happy outlook on life, they were taken along when long sessions of travel took place. They were even used as bargaining chips and trade as sailors visited various continents. In Spain, they were well embraced and during the 1300s, Italian sailors renewed their love for the dog, which soon became the breed of choice for members of royalty.

Throughout the years, the dog would exhibit a "lion-style" cut, appear on the laps of nobility, decorate famous paintings during the Renaissance, and perform tricks with organ grinders on the streets during the late 1800s. In 1934, the Bichon Frise would enter the stud book of the French Kennel Club. The United States did not set eyes on the breed until 1955 where the American Kennel Club eventually bestowed recognition in 1973.

With a gentle manner, the Bichon Frise makes a sensitive, playful pet that is full of adoring affection. They love to leap into a comfortable space (preferably a lap) and enjoy a satisfying nap. The breed is full of energy and live to please their owners. They also thrive on the activity and movement around them, often sending them into over excitement. To obtain a Bichon Frise as your own, you should be ready to shower them with attention and exercise. Overall, they make perfect pets for individuals with allergies (since they are a non-moulting breed), and families with young children.

Daily Care and Health Concerns of the Bichon Frise 

Keeping the face of a Bichon Frise clean and trimmed is important so that eye discharge and mucus will not gather at the hair located in front of their eyes. Brushing their fur on a daily basis is suggested because it has a tendency to go wild; tangled knots are a common consequence for not groomed at least 2 to 3 times per week. In the worst cases, the tangles turn into matting.

Bichon Frises live to 13 to 16 years of age and have been known to push the envelope to their 21st birthday. To keep the breed healthy and prosperous, keeping an eye out for their primary health threats, such as bladder infections, bladder stones, and subluxating kneecaps, is recommended. The front teeth of a Bichon Frise are also of concern, as they are not often used and tend to become damaged. Crunchy treats can help keep the teeth clean and healthy. The breed is also prone to develop allergies and suffer ear infections.
