As the owner of a Bichon Frisé, you want your dog to be a healthy member of the family. This article will show you several ways to enhance the physical and mental health of your Bichon Frisé.
Despite the Bichon's small size and delicate appearance, he is a hardy, athletic dog. This breed will thrive on a moderate amount of physical activity. But what is the best kind of exercise? Your dog may enjoy trotting around the backyard, but don't just send him outside and expect him to exercise sufficiently by himself. Instead, make a habit of walking your dog on a leash as often as possible. Steady walking at a moderate pace is the most beneficial type of activity for the Bichon Frisé's heart, muscles, and joints.
Two walks a day, for at least half a mile each, is a good minimum level of activity to aim for. A little more is even better, especially if your dog is restless or misbehaving for no apparent reason. Apartment dwellers are generally conscientious about walking their dogs. However, these Bichon owners should try to find safe locations where the dog can run off leash once in a while, such as a friend's property, an empty schoolyard, or a dog park.
And here's another tip: use a plain, six-foot nylon leash. The extendible leashes are popular, but many professional dog trainers recommend that you don't use them. Why is that? It's important for your Bichon's safety and comfort that he learns to walk nicely on a leash without pulling (at least most of the time). Training your Bichon doesn't have to be limited to sit, stay, and come (although these skills are essential for any dog). Think up some cute tricks to teach your Bichon. Teach your dog to go through a hoop, under a chair, across a board, around a box, and then back again.

You don't have to stop giving food rewards, though. Instead of fattening cookies, offer your dog small pieces of vegetables and fruit. Vegetables may be raw or cooked, fresh or frozen. Canned vegetables are fine as long as no salt was added in processing. Your Bichon will benefit from the nutrition and fiber.

Bichon Frise
The Bichon Frise is a relatively small dog, also commonly known as Tenerife Dog, Bichon Tenerife or Bichon a poil Frise, originating in France. It was registered with the AKC first in 1972 despite having a very long history. Their name is of course in French and can be translated to "curly lap dog", which describes both its appearance and lifestyle perfectly. It is a descendant from the Barbet breed or Water Spaniel, both of which have existed in the Mediterranean area for over 2000 years. More exact origins are not known.
The Bichon Frise were often used as boatdogs earlier, a job for which they were perfectly suited for as they did not shed any hair and did not need much exercise either. In general this breed has a very sweet personality, is very happy, and is always eager to please its owners. They make great companions and can be quite entertaining as well, since they love to perform various tricks and to show off. They are very sociable and attention craving, and fit perfectly for both experienced and inexperienced dog owners as long as the owners have a lot of extra time to devote to them. They enjoy walks, but are also comfortable inside, and they are not very fond of too much activity. The Bichon Frise can also be very independent, and they have very high pitched barks, but are not at all aggressive towards nor strangers nor smaller animals.
In appearance the Bichon Frise is small and sturdy, with very curly fur commonly coloured in white, sometimes with traces of apricot or buff. Their dark eyes and nose stand out in contrast to their very lightly coloured fur. Their head is proportionate to its body, their ears hang down on both sides of their head, and are usually not visible at all from a distance. Even though they do not shed any hair at all they still need much grooming, preferably many times a week. They weigh in average between 3 to 5 kg (7 to 12 pounds) and have a height between 23 to 30 cm (9 to12 inches). They have a lifespan averaging 14-18 years, which is much compared to other dogs of similar breeds. A number of common health issues include luxating patella, epilepsy, cataracts, allergies, bleeding disorders, and bladder stones. The leading causes of death are cancer and various so far unknown symptoms. It is also important that the parents of your Bichon Frise puppy have both OFA and CERF certificates.
