What are Bifocal Contact Lenses?

Bifocal Contacts are designed for people who suffer from an eye condition called presbyopia (also known as "old eye"), which is the inability to focus on near objects. If you have to read that menu at arms length you know what I mean.

Multifocal contacts and Progressive contacts are sometimes used interchangeably to describe bifocal contacts. The 3 distinct types of bifocal lenses are Aspheric, Concentric and Translating contact lenses.

Bifocal/Multifocal Contact Lenses: The Different Design Types

Bifocal, Multifocal & Aspheric Contact Lenses

Did you know that there are different types of bifocal/multifocal lenses? If you have presbyopia (trouble seeing on near objects clearly) and are looking for effective treatments for nearsightedness and farsightedness, you have come to the right spot.

There are 3 distinct design types of bifocal /multifocal contact lenses and this article will explain what they are and how you can make the best decision for your own lifestyle.

You might have heard the terms multifocal contacts, progressives, aspheric or even translating contact lenses. These terms refer to the different multifocal contact lens designs used to allow you to have clear vision at far, near and all distances in between.

No need to wear bulky eye glasses anymore. No need to suffer from eye fatigue, headaches, eye strain or blurred vision, now you have a choice. Ok on to the different styles of bifocal soft contact lenses.

Translating Bifocal Contact

These lenses work much like bifocal eyeglasses because there are two distinct prescription areas, one for far vision and the other for near vision. The lens can have either near or far vision at the bottom or the top, depending on your visual needs. These lenses tend to rotate when you blink, to avoid the lens from rotating the bottom is flattened (truncated) and/or weighted (ballasted), which helps to keep the lens in the correct position.

Concentric Contact Lenses

These contacts have an arrangement of prescriptions in a bulls eye pattern in which they alternate in strength from far to near. Also known as annular contact lens. Depending on your vision needs the centre of the lens can either be designed for far vision or near vision.

Aspheric Multifocal Contact Lens

This design works more like progressive eyeglass lenses, that is, different prescriptive powers are located across the lens letting you see clearly at all distances. Also commonly referred to as progressive contact lens. Depending on your vision correction needs, the outer part of the lens for distance and the centre of the lens will be for near sight. These aspheric lenses do require a period of adjustment, the eyes eventually learn to ignore far objects when focusing on near objects and vice versa.

Which bifocal contact design is right for you? It really depends on your lifestyle and in what situations you are mostly going to be exposed to most often. Your eye doctor or eye care professional will guide you through which contact lens will be most suitable for your situation.

Many of the major contact lens manufacturers offer free samples and you can use this to your advantage to see which brand feels best. Contact lenses are considered medical devices and you must have a prescription especially if you are buying your bifocal/multifocal contact lenses online.

It is very important that you are properly fitted for your bifocal contacts by your Optometrist, otherwise when you blink your bifocal lens might slide around on your pupil causing distorted vision. Your eye doctor will also teach you how to handle them, how to put them in, how to remove them and how to wash them (if required). He/she will also tell you if they are disposable contacts and if not find the right contact lens solution for your specific needs.
