Big Black Bear -- Children's Song

Ranked #6,292 in Music, #172,912 overall

Big Black Bear, from the Book and Program "Kootenay Shine," by Sheila Murray-Nellis

This lens began as an introduction to my children's song "Big Black Bear," one of the songs in a collaborative children's music and art program called "Kootenay Shine: Learning Through the Arts with Love."

The focus of the song is introducing children to becoming "bear aware," an important concept for anyone living in close proximity to bears. As I added to the lens, I began to realize that what I was really writing about was bear awareness in general. So I made the lens into two separate lenses. Come visit my second lens on becoming more bear aware after you read this one.

Big Black Bear

It's amazing to me how close bears come to people's homes in bear country. When I first moved to British Columbia, I found that idea terrifying. As I learned more about living here, however, I found that black bear encounters are often the fault of humans being irresponsible with such things as storing garbage and managing fruit trees. The animals are not the ones whose behavior has to change -- it is we humans who have to take more responsibility for not encouraging bears to come into our space. In addition, we need to avoid destroying the bear's habitat so that they are not forced to squeeze into our yards. A black bear would much rather keep to his own habitat, but bears can be opportunistic, too, and come looking for food when we inadvertently set it out for him.

So here's the song I wrote. The first three notes of the refrain are sol-mi-do.

Big Black Bear

(Refrain)
Big black bear
Bumbling by my window
Big black bear
Sniffing at my door
Big black bear
Where do you think you're going?
Big black bear, you can't come in!

I go out to dump my garbage
and what do you think I see?
A great and fuzzy black bear
looking back at me.
I turn and there's his brother
up in my apple tree!
Big black bear, you can't come in!
(Refrain)

Wait a minute!

Big black bear
I'm teasing you with my garbage
Big black bear
I tempt you with my fruit
Big black bear
It's not your fault -- you're hungry!
Big black bear
that's why you come in!
(Refrain)

Big black bear
I'll put away my garbage
Big black bear
I'll pick up all my fruit
Big black bear
I'll try not to be so messy
Big black bear
then you won't come in!

Big black bear
I'm peeking in your window
Big black bear
I'm bumbling by your door
Big black bear
What have I been doing?
Big black bear
I won't crowd you no more!
