Ranked #6,554 in Books, Poetry & Writing, #238,028 overall | Donates to Donors Choose
Bottom line...if you grew up in Cleveland you know "Big Chuck" Schodowski.
From the early days with Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson) to the "Hoolihan & Big Chuck Show" to "Big Chuck & Lil' John"... Big Chuck has ruled the Cleveland airways and kept us laughing for over 40 years.
Now retired Big Chuck has managed to pack 47 years of good times and memories into a wonderful biography that every Clevelander should own.

Why I think everyone should read "Big Chuck!"
I got 3 things from "Big Chuck! My Favorite Stories from 47 Years on Cleveland TV" that I'd like to share with my readers.
1) Chuck Schodowski is an amazing story teller . I love biographies and this one tops my list for creativity, heart and humor. "Big Chuck" takes you along on a fabulous trip though Cleveland television history by drawing you in to his memories and bringing you along for the ride. Cleveland is a small town (relatively speaking), everyone knows the landmarks, the local celebrities and the lingo. For instance Clevelanders call Pepsi "Pop" not soda, not cola, but "Pop"...we're quirky that way. So when Chuck shares stories about Ghoulardi, The Kielbasa Kid, Dick Goddard, Euclid Ave., and the old Cleveland Stadium we're there with him. He let's you in on the joke, makes you care and most importantly makes you laugh.
2) I wish it was the 1970's again...just for a day or so. I love the way Chuck tells stories about stealing signs off buses, planting smoke bombs and playing the most daring practical jokes ever. Sadly the work Chuck did in the 60's & 70's..."The Certain Ethnic _____", Kielbasa Kid, grabbing people off the street to be in the show, outrageous pranks would never fly in today's world. They lawyers would never allow it. Chuck took his genius to the limits and it worked. He was revolutionary.
3) Chuck was the hardest working man in Cleveland. Seriously he was. Chuck worked day and night (literally) doing engineer work for TV8, writing skits, performing, doing PR, charity events, the All-Star sporting events. He was dedicated to his craft and despite offers to leave Cleveland for bigger acclaim, Chuck stayed in Cleveland. a town he loved and cared about. It was not only where he worked, but his home.
So grab a copy of this book. Enjoy the ride, learn a little about the inner workings of TV8 and most importantly get to know the man behind "Big Chuck", trust me you won't be disappointed.

- Great book review. I grew up in Columbus, not Cleveland, but this sounds so typical of the area - and the era.

- Oh yeah - Pepsi is "Pop". I'm not from Cleveland, but within the general vicinity and my uncle once lived there. Have known a lot of broadcasters over the years, but Big Chuck is new to me. Delightful to "meet" him now through this review.
