Big Trees - Home of the Giant Sequoias

Calaveras Big Trees State Park, located up Highway 4 in Calaveras County, is home to some of the oldest trees still alive on the planet, the Giant Sequoias or Sequoiadendron giganteum. Thankfully these Big Trees were preserved for future generations by a group of far sighted early environmentalists, lead by early Women's group.

Calavaras Big Trees is featured in books on Great Northern California Escapes, Northern California Off the Beaten Path, Dayhikes in the Sierra, Best Tent Camping in Northern California and even Best Places to Kiss.

In 1900 Calaveras Grove State Park was established to preserve these majestic trees. Calaveras became a State Park in 1931. California Big Trees State Park continues a major tourist attraction, off the beaten path in Northern California.

This area has been a major tourist attraction ever since, and is considered the longest continuously operated tourist facility in California.

Preserving the Big Trees

Author Kimberly A. Jarvis also documents the efforts of women to get the Big Trees preserved, in her book Franconia Notch and the Women Who Saved It.

Women played a key role in one of the first campaigns to preserve forests and trees. In January 1900, it was discovered that the Calaveras Grove of Big Trees, Sequoia Gigantea located on the western slopes of the Sierras...were in danger of being logged. Once it learned of the situation, the California Federation of Women's Clubs offered their assistance in preserving these big trees.

In March of 1900, a Congressional bill in favor of acquiring the Big Trees was passed and signed by President William McKinley. This bill lead to the eventual creation of Calaveras Grove State Park in California (1900 - 1954).

More on the History of Big Trees

It probably seemed like a good idea at the time, but, in today's light, it is a sad legacy of the 19th century.

"It" is the cutting down of majestic trees in the Sierra Nevada just to prove their existence. And, without doubt, the toppling of massive Sequoias, the monarchs of the forest, was the most tragic occurrence of all.
