A Tribute to a New Generation of Big-Eye Artists

In the late 1950s, throughout the '60s and into the '70s, such artists as Margaret Keane, Gig and Maio created a new kind of mass-produced art known as 'big eye'. Now big-eye art has undergone a major revival, but with a twist: the wide-eyed, endearing waifs of the earlier movement have transformed into fairies, mermaids, demons and myriad otherworldly beings, including the famous 'Blythe' doll.

This extraordinary book showcases the dazzling works of 22 of today's most significant big-eye artists, offering an insight into a fantastical, sometimes bizarre, metaphysical world. Including over 150 captivating images, "Big Eye Art: Resurrected and Transformed, is a fascinating introduction to a cult art form, providing biographies, contact details and website addresses of the featured artists. A must-have for collectors of big-eye and Japanese anime and manga art and dolls, fans of fantasy and Gothic culture, and anyone interested in pop culture.

Whatever Possessed Me to Write this Quirky Book?

To make a long story short, in November of 2000, I began selling fantasy art on the Internet auction site eBay. I had just begun collecting Blythe dolls at that time (a color- and expression-changing saucer-eyed doll from 1972), and it suddenly dawned on me that I could paint a portrait of one of my Blythe dolls. So I painted a portrait in oils on canvas of my blonde Blythe doll in Kozy Kape fashion, sold it on eBay, and the rest is history.

In 2006, I realized how popular big-eye art had become--many artists were creating big-eye renditions of their favorite dolls such as Pullip, Blythe, and Dollfie--so I started researching other big-eye artists to see what they were creating. Needless to say, I was amazed at all the big-eye art out there, and decided to write a book about big-eye art to showcase this spellbinding art form.

I chose twenty-two big-eye art practitioners (including me), and assembled their art and musings into a 224 page big-eye art extravaganza for the rest of the world to enjoy, featuring a broad spectrum of styles and intrepretations, with inspiring and fascinating biographies to boot!

What People Are Saying About Big Eye Art: Resurrected and Transformed:

"Big Eye Art: Resurrected and Transformed" is the Very First Book to Pay Tribute to Big-Eye Art of the 21st Century!

One of the main reasons I felt a need to write "Big Eye Art: Resurrected and Transformed" was to fill a void: even though big-eye art has clearly reemerged in the twenty-first century, there were no books on the market addressing this newly transformed art form.

"Big Eye Art: Resurrected and Transformed" fills this void perfectly with a collaboration of art styles as different as night and day, each and every piece a reflection of our rapidly evolving times. I'm very proud of this book and all the artists who contributed to its being; they are truly pioneers of a new era in art.

In the twenty-first century, big-eye art is popular once again. Many changes have come about since big-eye art had its beginnings, and today's big-eye art reflects these changes. Influences include: Japanese anime, manga, big-eye dolls such as Blythe (whose reincarnation is largely attributed to photographer Gina Garan), Pullip, Dollfie, and Bratz, Gothic subculture, video games, fairies, fantasy art, lowbrow, steampunk, and horror movies and novels.
