Bigfoot For Kids

The Eastern Bigfoot is not as common as the Western Sasquatch. It can be nine feet tall and can weigh up to a thousand pounds. It has been seen in different colors: red, black, brown, reddish-brown and even white. No one knows why the Sasquatch is more common than Bigfoot. Bigfoot has been sighted all over the Eastern USA, which includes Pennslyvania, New York, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Even though it's called the Eastern Bigfoot, it has also been sighted in other states. There is a famous photo of a white Bigfoot that was taken by a river in Texas.

The most common Bigfoot-like creature is the Western Sasquatch. It has been sighted on the western border of North America and is similar to the Eastern Bigfoot. It has also been seen in different colors, including brown, black, reddish-brown, and even white (although white is very rare). Like the Eastern Bigfoot, it is nine feet tall and weighs up to a thousand pounds. It lives in the wildernesses of Alaska, Washington, Oregon and California. The famous Patterson/Gimlin film was taken in northern California. Roger Patterson and his partner, Bob Gimlin, were riding horseback through the woods when suddenly Patterson's horse stood up on its hind legs and he fell backward. He stumbled to the camera and began filming the creature that had scared the animal. It was brown and walked on two legs like a human, but it was larger than most humans, probably seven feet. It even turned to look at Patterson with white, glowing eyes before continuing to walk away. It then disappeared into the forest. The Sasquatch, or "hairy giant" (the Indians named it that), has been sighted a lot more than the Bigfoot, Yeti and Skunk Ape. No one knows why it has been sighted mostly in the Western United States.

The Yeti is the most mysterious Bigfoot-like creature. It is found in the Himalaya Mountains and it is said to have 12-inch fangs. Sometimes its footprints are found in the snow. It has been seen in several different colors, mostly black, white, and grey, although some people have claimed to see a brown one. The Yeti is mysterious in a few ways, one of which is its height. Some people have said that the Yeti can grow up to fifteen feet tall (!), but it's extremely rare to see one that big. Most who have claimed to have seen the Yeti estimate that it is about as tall as the Eastern Bigfoot, which can be around nine feet. It is said that the Yeti is very dangerous. Some people have claimed to have been attacked by it and sometimes have been able to show visible cuts and bruises. Nobody knows how dangerous the Yeti is, but there have been attacks by something unknown in the Himalayas.

One humorous story of a Yeti sighting was when a man was hiking up one of the mountains and he spotted something a long distance away. He took photos of it, but soon scientific analysis proved that the "Yeti" he saw was nothing but a black rock! Is the Yeti and Bigfoot the same thing? No one knows.

Why is something in the Florida Everglades called the Skunk Ape? Well, there is a mysterious creature looks similar to an ape and it smells like a skunk! There have been many Skunk Ape sightings and, like the Yeti, no one knows if it's a Bigfoot or not. Some people have claimed to have seen the Skunk Ape in different colors, including gray, black, white, brown, and red. Sometimes it is seen with its head on a "neck." This is not very ape-like, because apes' heads seem to be resting on their shoulders instead of on a neck. Most people have seen the Skunk Ape as a brown blur, but some have seen it up close! And there have been photos of it, so we know a little bit of what it looks like.

Some Skunk Ape descriptions say they are around 5 feet tall, very much unlike the descriptions of a much taller Eastern Bigfoot or Western Sasquatch. Several sightings of the Skunk Ape were reported by a man named Dave Shealy (see his video below). He saw something in a field when he was just a boy. Today he works as a Skunk Ape investigator in the Florida Everglades...my grandfather, an Everglades tour guide, happens to know him personally! When Mr. Shealy was just ten years old he went hunting with his brother. The grass was really high, so when his brother said, "What is that?" he couldn't see over the grass to see what his brother was talking about. So he lifted him up and there was a brown figure running away from them. The Skunk Ape has been seen many times and the most famous sighting was when Mr. Shealy was resting in a tree stand. It was much taller than the grass, so he could see over it easily. He had dozed off and when he woke up, he saw something moving across the field. He took about 27 photos of it until it disappeared between some trees.

Is there a mysterious and unknown ape roaming the swamp? Or could it be that the Skunk Ape is a hoax? I hope some day we find out for sure!
