False Bigfoot Reports - Why Do People Lie About Bigfoot?
Ranked #3,593 in Pets & Animals, #90,909 overall
Why do people lie about seeing Bigfoot?
Some people habitually claim to see Bigfoot when they haven't seen any such thing. Some become obsessed with a fantasy of seeing Bigfoot and believe they can fool anyone into thinking they've had a real Bigfoot sighting. Or two, or three.
Why do they lie about seeing Bigfoot?
Compulsive lying is a treacherous, insane behavior that comes from a desperate need to be recognized; a need for attention.
I've been investigating and studying Bigfoot sightings for more than five years now. These are some of my observations about what I've come to call 'Bigfoot Compulsive Lying" or "Bigfoot Obsession."

People who report Bigfoot sightings to get undeserved attention
Can you relate to this Bigfoot research scenario?
If you're a Bigfoot researcher I'm sure you can identify with this kind of thing. You, the ever-curious, dedicated researcher, go see some excited reporter of Bigfoot phenomena only to be dismayed as the story gets bigger, crazier, and more unbelievable by the minute. You wonder what you're doing there, why the reporting party didn't stop when the story was something you could still believe, and worst of all - you're wondering what kind of mental illness this person has.
You try to say the right things, to make the person think you're still considering their story to be more valuable than the pure trash it really is, so that you can get out of there safely without being battered for your lack of falling for the insanity you're hearing.
Why people lie about seeing Bigfoot
...compulsive liars!
The first reason people lie about seeing Bigfoot is that they probably want some attention. Maybe they've always thought they'd like to see a Bigfoot, and there you are, a Bigfoot researcher, and they want your attention. How will they do it? By claiming they've seen one.
Most people who have actually seen a Bigfoot will clam up and refuse to talk, though some will panic and need to tell someone they believe will not think they're crazy -- a Bigfoot researcher. But even then, there will be a hesitancy.
When you see someone gushing at the mouth to tell you an outlandish story, beware! You may be getting a whopper of a lie from an attention-craving prevaricator.
The second reason people lie is that they've seen that behavior modeled by authority figures - usually parents or older siblings. Maybe they think lying is normal behavior, and that if you meet a Bigfoot researcher the normal thing to do is put one over on the researcher who would believe crazy things anyway.
The third reason people lie about Bigfoot - is fear. If they've told other people that they saw a Bigfoot and word got around, and now you are there to ask what happened, the lie continues out of fear. They no longer can go back on their story.
Some people get so much satisfaction from their first Bigfoot lie, they have to keep adding to it. You may hear only one Bigfoot encounter story from this person, but maybe in a year or two you'll find out they're telling someone else they saw Bigfoot three times in several different locations. How can you continue to believe?
That's when Bigfoot lying becomes Bigfoot obsession. By this time the obsessed liar will probably considering himself king of the Bigfoot scene. This can become a form of megalomania.
Whatever the reason, seasoned Bigfoot researchers must learn to be savvy to the ways of liars who would waste your research time and dollars by the telling of shabby lies.

- I have a friend who swears that bigfoot paralyzed him with the flick of his bigfoot wrist while camping in the Ouachita mountains. He also claims that bigfoot burned his cabin down prior to this...He has gathered some pretty compelling foot print castings, and he's a most likeable guy, but I've also never seen him without a drink in his hand. =D The world may never know...
