Bigfoot as a Paranormal Creature: The Stranger Side of Sasquatch
The first time I came across an article about an encounter with not only Bigfoot, but UFOs, telepathy, dancing balls of light, and shape-shifting Sasquatch, I literally thought I was reading something written by a madman. I almost threw the article away; but, being the Fortean, anomalous loving junkie I am, I saved it. As happens in paranormal and esoteric research, sychronicities started to come my way; suddenly I was coming across an item about these Bigfoot encounters involving shape shifting, telepathy, UFOs, etc. at least once a week.
So I had to rethink my opinions on this. From all over the world, people were reporting these kinds of encounters. They couldn't all be crazy or lying. After awhile, I came across two cases here in Oregon; I met one of the men -- Stan Johnson -- who had a life long encounter with this high strangeness side of Bigfoot; and had my own odd experience involving Johnson and his Bigfoot experiences.
Now, I am convinced there is something far more than a simple "giant ape" explanation for Bigfoot, Australia's Yowie, and other hairy hominids. Call them shapeshifters, fairies, inter-dimensional beings, but it does seem that these beings transcend the "flesh and blood" only theory.

- The Abominable Snowman: Was Film's Creator Aware of Paranormal Bigfoot?
- I wrote this for my Trickster's Realm column for the Tim Binnall's site Binnall of America:
But this time, I was surprised by what I noticed concerning the Yeti. Even though the promos for the film are typically theatrical and focus on the idea of Yeti as a big evil monster ("The world's most shocking monster!" "What men must not see!" and my favorite "A dark new hellish half-world of horror!") the movie seems to be aware of the so-called paranormal aspects of Bigfoot/Yeti.
For those who aren't familiar with the movie: a small group of people go looking for the Yeti in the Himalayas, including Peter Cushing as mild mannered botanist, Dr. Rollason and Forest Tucker as the brash American Dr.Tom Friend. When I tuned in Friend and Rollason are in the Himalayas at their camp; another character is with them but he ends up dead pretty quickly, having died of a heart attack or fright upon seeing a Yeti.
At one point, Rollason says to Friend that the Yeti are "very strong, very intelligent, and have powers we aren't even capable of having yet." I'm paraphrasing here, but that was the gist. - Sasquatch: The No Kill Philosophy
- Some Bigfoot researchers believe in a "kill" philosohphy; I don't. I absolutely do not support efforts to kill or trap live a Sasquatch. I'm aware of the arguments for doing so; but they do not justify trapping or killing. In this article I explain why.
Recently, cryptid researcher Ken Gerhard was a guest here on Binnall of America. As usual, the interview was great; Tim did a fine job of interviewing, as he always does. Gerhard is knowledgeable about his topics, he's done the research, and he's a good speaker. To my surprise, he supports the idea that Bigfoot is a paranormal type being. Too much weirdness going on that can't be dismissed, he says, and this goes for similar creatures the world over, such as Australia's Yowie.
Gerhard also supports a "kill" philosophy. That surprised me, only because he also accepts the paranormal view. I don't know of other researchers (though they may be some of course) who support both views concurrently. I was also surprised that Tim himself agrees with Gerhard. As Tim said, he used to support a "no kill" philosophy, but, as he's given it thought, he's moved away from that to supporting a kill.
I don't mean to pick on Tim, Gerhard or anyone else who supports a kill, but this is a very important thing here. We're talking about the intentional, pre-mediated killing of a creature. And for, in my view, what amounts to nothing more than ego gratification. I realize that researchers who support this view don't see it this way, and, in fact, believe strongly a kill would serve science and all aspects of Fortean, crypto, etc. research well. I understand that. I don't believe, however, that that is reason enough.

- The Creature of Conser Lake in Ivan T. Sanderson's "Abominable Snowmen%u2026"
- In my book The Ghost of Conser Lake, (unpublished) I cite an interesting passage from Ivan T. Sanderson's book Abominable Snowmen about the creature. (You can read a previous section of the book here. Mention of "Flix," the Bigfoot like being that appeared in Millersburg, Oregon in the late 1950s -early 1960s, is one of those interesting high strangeness BHM (big hairy monster) cases. Here's a section from my book, with added comments in parentheses.
Flix Gets Around
Flix made the news for a good two years. He was seen off and on in the area during that time. Clarence Starr, owner of the Owl Cafe in Albany at the time, told Westby (Betty Westby, the reporter who wrote several articles about Flix for the
Democrat Albany Herald
newspaper) that the monster "had trampled down a lot of mint on his farm and that he will not be able to harvest much of his crop."
An elderly woman "who came from one of the early pioneer families," the paper noted, walked into theGreater Albanyoffice to give her story of her encounter with Flix:
"That monster was in our pasture last night. My neighbor took a shot at it. He found some blood on the ground, so he thinks he hit it. We saw its tracks, and the women in our neighborhood are scared to go anywhere at night or even sit on porches or leave the doors or windows open. I think he sheriff an state police should Hunt this creature down before it kills someone." - Walking Hairy Trees in Oregon: (More McMinnville)
- A Bigfoot sighting in 1999, in McMinnville, Oregon (home of the famous Trent UFO photos; the town hosts an annual UFO Festival every May, this May will be the 10th one) reminded me of the Reeves case thirty years earlier. While not the same kind of event, and not on the coast (McMinnville is approximately a hundred miles from Newport on the coast) the following story does describe the Bigfoot type creature as a "walking tree."

April 6, 2008
In Peter Guittilla's Bigfoot Files, he writes about a 1979 report of Bigfoot activity in the area where the witnesses lived -- hearing screams, etc. -- as well as beeping sounds:
"One night in April at 2:30am my husband woke me to listen to odd beeping sounds coming from the woods. These have not been identified and continued on and off for about a year." ~ p136
Guittilla recounts other Bigfoot stories, where witnesses say they hear all kinds of unusual sounds coming from areas reported to have Bigfoot activity, including coming from underground: The sounds which often occur in combinations, are described variously as buzzing, beeping, whirling, humming ..." ~ p 197 Bigfoot Files
