Bigfoot - My Neighbor?

I've always been intrigued by the idea of Bigfoot, but it wasn't until 2005 that I decided to learn more about them.

I've never seen Bigfoot, but I live in a small town in the middle of a huge forest in Northern California, and lots of people around here say they may have seen one. My town has businesses named after Bigfoot, statues of Bigfoot, and huge footprints painted on the sidewalks in front of a few businesses. Yet nobody here, until now, has put this information together, to try to prove or disprove the town's claim to fame.

During the past few years I've heard plenty of local Bigfoot stories, and have heard from people in other parts of the country who claim to have seen Bigfoot too. I've collected information on my blog, Bigfoot Sightings.

The Little Grider Creek Sighting

...less than a mile from where I live.

In 2002 a teenager was driving his pickup truck on Highway 96, next to a bridge crossing Little Grider Creek. There, a large, dark creature crossed the road, standing erect on two feet. The teenager saw it for only a moment in the glare of his truck's headlights - and then it was gone, lost in darkness. He did not want to talk to anyone about this, but word got around town anyhow. A few years later I talked to a young man about Bigfoot. It turned out to be a friend of the person who had that sighting. He said they returned to the site the next day and found footprints in the area. When asked if they were anything like a Bigfoot footprint cast we had present, he said one word: "Bigger."

Yellow Eyes

...less than a mile from Happy Camp.

In 2003 a woman saw a large, hairy creature near her yard. A forest fire burned nearby and she thought it could be a refugee from that conflagration. She left apples and other fruit for it. These disappeared while she wasn't watching - and she knew the creature took them. One day she turned to see the creature looking at her through her kitchen window. That window was almost ten feet off the ground. She got a good look at the hairy face, remembering that the eyes were yellow.

Sighting Near China Point

...five miles east of Happy Camp.

A forest service employee on the way to work one morning saw a large, upright dark creature cross Highway 96 in front of her car. It then climbed a steep hill next to the road. At work she told a co-worker who decided to go back to the area to see if she could find any sign of the animal. Looking at the top of the hill, she saw a dark creature looking down at her. After a moment, it turned and disappeared into the woods.

A Minister Saw It

...west of here, not far out of town.

In 2005 a tourist was driving through the Klamath River Valley when he thought he saw Bigfoot. He was still west of Happy Camp, driving toward our town, when he saw a large dark creature jump down onto the road from a hillside. It stood up and crossed the road in only two or three steps, then disappeared in the darkness. This was at about 10pm and everyone else in his car was sleeping. The man who had the sighting is the head minister for a large church in Southern California.

Huge Bigfoot Footprint

...found on the same hill I live on.

In 2005 a man visiting from Southern California found a Bigfoot footprint on the other side of the hill I live on. He was in town as a volunteer for Bigfoot research. A woman on that side of the hill claimed that she'd seen Bigfoot in her yard. He found the footprint uphill from her in an isolated location. The photo shows the large Happy Camp Bigfoot print next to a much smaller Bigfoot print found in another location.

Where Is Happy Camp?

...it's in the middle of the Klamath National Forest.

This photo is taken from the top of the Town Trail across the Klamath River and shows almost all of Happy Camp. See the river at the bottom of the picture?

Lots of people think Happy Camp is just a campground. That's not true. We have lots of things here - including a market, high school, elementary school, clinic, card lock gas station, two restaurants, three motels, and the headquarters of the Karuk Tribe.

Happy Camp is a very small town - about 1200 people - in the middle of the Klamath National Forest in Northern California. The Klamath River runs through our town. We're 20 miles south of the Oregon border and in the summertime there's a road that takes us to Cave Junction, Oregon, only 40 miles north of here. That road is closed all winter. Yreka is 80 miles east - it takes two hours to get there on the State of Jefferson Scenic Byway. Eureka is a three and one-half hour drive west of here. The Bigfoot Scenic Byway runs between Happy Camp and Willow Creek, where there's a Bigfoot museum.

Happy Camp employers include the school system, the US Forest Service, the Karuk Tribe, and a number of small businesses including the New 49'ers Gold Prospecting Club.

For more information about this town, see Happy Camp News.

John Green's Bigfoot Book

...just the facts!

John Green is a legend in the Bigfoot world. He was doing Bigfoot research in the Bluff Creek area long before Roger Patterson got there with his rented movie camera! Bluff Creek is about 50 miles west of Happy Camp.

Sasquatch: The Apes Among Us

Amazon Price: $34.95 (as of 07/04/2009)Buy Now

This book takes you through the history of Bigfoot reporting from the perspective of an experienced newspaper reporter. John Green, wrote this in the 1970's and it is a CLASSIC that has withstood the test of time. If you really want to know about Bigfooting, this is a great place to start.

The Patterson Bigfoot Film

The Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot expedition took place at Bluff Creek - about fifty miles downriver from my home in Happy Camp. When I say 'downriver' I refer to the Klamath River, which I live beside.

A lot of people mistakenly think that a man on his deathbed said this was a hoax, but that's not the truth. Patterson, who filmed this, said on his deathbed that this is an authentic film of an unknown bipedal creature. Here's a link for an in-depth explanation of pros and cons regarding the Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot film.

The Discovery Channel talks about the Patterson Bigfoot sighting and footage.

The Hoopa Project

I can't recommend this book enough! It is really, really good. Great even. Amazing. Fantastic. Eye-opening.

Hoopa Project: Bigfoot Encounters in California

Amazon Price: (as of 07/04/2009)Buy Now

David Paulides spent three years investigating Bigfoot sightings in the Hoopa, California area. He became friends with many local Native Americans who had Bigfoot experiences they were willing to share. Paulides, an ex-law enforcement investigator, brought his training and skills to the field of Bigfoot research and raised the bar on Bigfoot investigation practices. This book is well researched, expertly written, and pretty much blows the cover off such questions as "Do Sasquatch exist?" and "What do they look like?"

Paulides hired a law enforcement forensic artist, Harvey Pratt, also a Native American, to do sketches for those with Bigfoot encounter experiences. It is mind boggling how sketches done with different witnesses matched the same general characteristics time and time again.

This book is very exciting, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to know the truth about Bigfoot.

...and one more thing...

Hoopa, California, is just south of Bluff Creek where the famous Gimlin-Patterson Bigfoot was filmed. The area seems to be innundated by Bigfoot, some of whom apparently think that occasionally roaming through human territory is A-OK, day or night.

Bigfoot Evidence

Here's a list of elements Bigfoot researchers look for in Bigfoot reports, or in the field.

  • Sightings.

  • Footprints.

  • Scent: pungent odor similar to skunk in intensity.

  • Their voices: loud screams and howls. Some Bigfoot reports indicate they talk to one another with guttural grunts, squeaks and clicks. Compare with sounds at Bigfoot Sounds.Com.

  • Rock throwing. Bears and cougars cannot throw rocks; Bigfoot can. This seems to be done to frighten people away rather than to harm them.

  • Broken tree branches, or broken-off tops of small trees around six or more feet above the ground.

  • Branch knocking: They are said to communicate by hitting trees with branches.

  • Rock sounds: They are said to hit rocks together.

  • Rock piles: They are said to leave boulders piled up, often near the ridges.

  • Beds: Piles of leaves/pine needles, etc. have been found and claims made that these indicate Bigfoot bedding, sometimes with animal remains nearby.

  • Shelters: Trees unnaturally bent into a dome shape could indicate a Bigfoot shelter.

Bigfoot Film Controversy and Journal

Bigfoot Film Journal

I haven't read the Bigfoot Film Controversy book yet, but I'm reading Christopher L. Murphy's more recent e-book, the Bigfoot Film Journal, which is a follow up. Murphy gives a detailed analysis of the Patterson Bigfoot film frame by frame, plus puts the creation of the film into historical context.

In his words from the foreward of The Bigfoot Film Journal:

"My supplement provides an overview of the filming story, twelve film-frame images, scientific reports on the film, and a section in which I address the allegation by Greg Long that Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin fabricated the film. . . . .

"In the course of events over many years, I have been of the opinion that we (the bigfoot community) need to put more on the table concerning the remarkable Patterson/Gimlin film. In other words, to move in closer and present and examine all of the circumstances and issues surrounding the film. In this way, we might be able to eliminate (or at least minimize) all of the criticism and skepticism that somehow evolves in the minds of journalists and others about the film.

"Here then, is everything I have gathered, neatly arranged and discussed, topic by topic." - Christopher L. Murphy

I can't find the Bigfoot Film Journal on Amazon but you can buy it from Hancock House Publishers as an e-book PDF or as an soft-cover print edition. This is expensive in print because there are lots of color pictures - almost every page is illustrated with photos, drawings or maps. It is quite attractive.

Thanks for visiting my lens about Bigfoot in my neighborhood...

I love the idea that an unknown creature is padding around in the forest nearby. It helps to know it isn't likely to be violent. Bigfoot sighting reports are fascinating to read, and to daydream about. I appreciate every report I receive.

We talked with a hard core hunter one time and asked him about Bigfoot. He waid well there wouldn't be a law against killing them if the government didn't feel they existed. When we asked if he ad seen any, his face turned white with a look of fear, and he couldn't really talk about it. He know more than he would say.

Hi Linda--I can't believe reading about Happy Camp, and Grider Ridge, where I once lived, and Big Foot Days, one of my favorite memories.

One time, 2 of my friends who worked for the Forest Service in Happy Camp swear they saw Big Foot--looked very spooked and also AWAKE, after the sighting!!

If Big Foot exists, Happy Camp would be the place to see it!!

Lots of UFO sitings there, as well!!

I believe!! Back in 1975 a friend and I were at her Great Aunts house in Texas. We were in a very secluded area Heavily wooded. Her Other Great aunt lived down the dirt road about 2 miles. So with nothing to do we would walk back and forth, talking. On one of the walks we could hear something just inside the tree line. The Trees lined each side of the road very thick so you really could see only about 10 foot in at the most. As we were walking we could hear something walking with us, we could hear twigs breaking and sometimes branches breaking. At one point we stopped and yelled out.. we thought it was one of our dads playing a trick on us.. But when we got back to where they were at the other house, they had been there the whole time skinning and dressing out a deer.
Several times on the walk we would stop and it would stop. When we would start walking it would too, it followed us almost a mile before we heard it stop.. We were only about a block from her other Aunts house.

Great Lens! I have never had a personal sighting of Bigfoot, but my mother was 100% a believer. A story she told me, that I have no reason to disbelieve, was about a man who, during the late 1950's, had a face-to-face encounter with a Bigfoot. She told me he had been working up in the mountains and had met a Bigfoot which scared the begeezus out of him. He came into the cafe she worked at, and canceled his standing lunch order because he wasn't going to go up there any more, and she told me he looked absolutely terrified as he told her what had happened.

Of course, that's third hand anecdotal information -- the only thing I can attest to is that my mother told me the story in the 60's and maintained up until her death a few years back that Bigfoot was alive and a lot smarter than people think.

I enjoyed this lens very much!

Dear sirs,

I believe in bigfoot. I am a biologist, i do not believe in ghost but i believe in bigfoot base on logic. Ofcourse many are fakes because we have many people looking for fun. I was told a story about this when i was in Maesai, border town of Thailand. The most important thing is that i did not ask for bigfoot story, she just told me out of her initiative. She said it is called "bearman" , tall and hairly, walk like man, live in family and always like to steal salts from their remote village. They do not harm people. When salt fall from their hands, they do not collect it back. I also lived in small village when i was small. Some of things we saw, to us is a daily affair but when somebody from town visited us, they look so surprise to see the same thing.

Hi Linda! Nice lens on a topic I've always been interested in: "Cryptozoology" I've done a lens that although it features Montana, it also spends some time talking about the "Flathead Lake Monster"--another critter that folks have occasionally seen, but not much documentation has been produced. Like "Nessy" (aka "Loch Ness Monster") and perhaps, like the Kraken -- Giant Squid Supreme--, it seems these critters really fuel the imagination. Folks have believed dragons are also imaginary. Maybe it depends on the definition, eh? I've seen big nasty lizards -- the Komodo Dragons -- and although they aren't *Dragons* in the sense that they don't breath fire... they seem to be close enough for me! Again, you've got a cool lens here -- Keep on keeping on!
