The Big Green Egg

Ranked #739 in Food & Cooking, #14,659 overall

I'm a barbecue fan. I'm from Lockhart, Texas, the self-proclaimed barbecue capital of the world; I was raised on barbecue; my first job was in a barbecue restaurant, where the "samples" I tasted were probably worth more than my paycheck; and I still eat barbecue as often as possible.  Today, my barbecue and grill of choice is the Big Green Egg.

While I'm probably biased, I think ceramic cookers, including the Big Green Egg, are the most versatile grills on the market today.  My intention in purchasing my Big Green Egg was for low-smoked barbecue.  And the Egg is great at that.  But it's also the best grill I've ever had.  I can sear steaks at 800 degrees or grill chicken or pork at more reasonable temperatures.  Add in the fact that the ceramic acts as a wood burning stove, making it perfect for pizza and baking, and I just can't see how another grill can do as much as the Egg.

Over the years, I've spent a lot of time answering questions about the egg, and I've designed this lens as a way to help answer many of those questions.

Big Green Egg --- The Movie

Short videos about or featuring eggs

If a picture is worth a thousand words, maybe a video is worth two-thousand. This section contains short videos related to the Big Green Egg.
An Interior Tour of the Big Green Egg
The BBQGuys, grill dealers, give a short video tour of the interior of the Egg.
An Exterior Tour of the Big Green Egg
The BBQ Guys continue with a discussion of the exterior features of the Egg. Caveat: the video is not the best quality, but does let you know something about the Egg.
Big Green Egg at one of my favorite restaurants
This video, from Bobbie Flay and the Food Network, features the use of the Big Green Egg at Austin's own Guero's, a mexican food institution.

Video tutorials from an Omaha, NE BGE dealer. The tutorials include outstanding tutorials on pizza, steak and prime rib.
Brisket on the Big Green Egg
A short video about an egger's first brisket. Other than the incessant (and unnecessary) mopping, it looks like a pretty decent job. And Tom T. Hall singing "I Like Beer" in the background is an added bonus.
Braised Roman Chicken on the Big Green Egg
For the more refined diner, a 22+ minute tutorial on preparing Braised Roman Chicken on the Big Green Egg (in a dutch oven)

"HOW TO" videos

Not necessarily egg related, but some explanations on the basics of grilling and barbecuing
How To Spatchcock a Chicken

Dizzy Pig BBQ
The Dizzy Pig BBQ is a group of egg owners that sell their own rubs. The company also has two competition teams that use their rubs and Eggs with great success at barbecue competitions around the country. Because I'm lazy, I use Dizzy Pig rubs on most of my cooks.

Just ordered up my BGE & should have it by the end of next week. I hat the wait, but I've been deliberating for the past year, so I suppose another week shouldn't (quite) kill me.

I'm really looking forward to doing some smoking, which I'm new to, but I'm especially excited to be using it as a pizza oven for our home-made tortilla pizzas. Num-mers!

    Great lens, mate.

Would you consider ollowing us to link you on our site?

The Egg looks great - I have a Weber Kettle that I've used for over 20 years - a bit battered now, but still works great. I think they must be similar but it doesn't look like they're available in the UK.
I love BBQ - even cooked a turkey in my Weber one Easter.

Great collection! You have a nice page here! Memories... Lived in Kermit, TX, 1 year. My late husband started up 2 BBQs every Saturday morning, took his shirt off and a dish towel as an apron. Then he smoked himself all day in the fumes drinking cold brews. I love Texas, but am in San Francisco now.

Very interesting lens! I eat very little barbecued meat, but it looks like the Egg can be viewed as a valuable alternative to cook with, in case there is a power outage. Now if I would just always remember to pick up the charcoal fluid...
