Hello June, Aloha and thanks so much for stopping by my lens with the nice comment and what is so rare as a day when June squid likes your lens? Thank you for that also. I've had the great pleasure of visiting Hawaii twice... once on R&R while in the army (mostly on Maui when the only hotel out toward Kapalua was a Holiday Inn and Lahania was still a laid back little village)... and then about ten years ago with a week on your "Big" Island and HQed on the Kona coast and a week in Maui. Rented a mustang convertible both places and only wish I'd had the benefit then of this amazing comprehensive lens to guide us around. As it was, we had an amazing visit to your beautiful Island anyway and as you so aptly describe... the diversity found on the big Island is nothing short of incredible. Hey BTW ... glad you liked that southern accent... a bit different from Minnesota ...eh? You've got to be like a fish out of water transitioning from Hawaii ... to Minnesota??? That must be a whole 'nother story for another lens... and I expect you're happy to see spring and the beginning of summer! ;>) Yawl come back to see us now ... heah?

I was in the neighborhood and decided to stop by the Big Island once again...can't believe it was back in 2009 that I was here and wasn't an angel then but am flying in angel dust today. I don't recall the Portuguese Man o' War and was arrested by the beauty of that picture!...*

I am so excited that I came across this lens, I was stationed in Oahu,HI when I was in the Army and I have always wanted to check out the other Islands but you just don't do that stuff by yourself. This was the next best thing! I loved it and am looking forward to the rest of the lenses. Thanks.
  • KonaGirl May 7, 2012 @ 7:58 am | delete
I am so glad you made it back from Desert Storm safely. I did get a chuckle, however, when you said, "have always wanted to check out the other Islands but you just don't do that stuff by yourself." I have done a lot of traveling on my own over the years, yet have never fought in a war in the desert. I'll bet you would not have a problem going anywhere by yourself, especially with your military training. LOL. Mahalo nui loa for the visit and nice comment.

I have been to Hawaii, but not for a long time and never to the big island. After your lens, I have just added it to my bucket list. Awesome lens and very deserving of your awards. Thanks.

Aloha, My husband and I have just spent about one hour reading this lens, watching the videos and wishing we were there. We have been to two of your hawaiian islands but not to this one. Right now, we are having very cold weather where I live in Canada and the thought of a vacation where it is warm really appeals to us. I will be reading your other lenses on your island soon. Angel blessings.

Ah, Hawaii, my heart. I just feel so good when I get in touch with Hawaii somehow. I would love to move there. I have only been to Kauai, which you probably know or I told you.. I love the land and how it knows you are there. I do not like poi, I must say. But I went to a Smith Family Luau and had kalua pig and it was very good. It is good to touch base with you. Aloha nui! Aloha, KG!

It's so amazing driving up from the beach and hitting Waimea, like it's on another continent. I'm glad you added Huli Sue's to your restaurant list - the best chili and barbecue in my opinion.

Absolutely love Pololu Beach and the hike down to it. The hardest black sand beach to get to, but the most worth it.

    Another great lens - Mahalo!

Aloha Kona Girl, I actually visited a friend in Hawaii years ago, I had the best time of my life. So many stories, seeing the northern point reminded me of when we tried to drive around the island and almost went off the cliff on that northern tip. Also have a picture of the Pali Highway Plaque the words came out backwards no other pictures of names/letters did. anyway AWESOME LENSE!!!!! =D Mahalo (SP?) been so long
  • KonaGirl Nov 28, 2010 @ 9:37 pm | delete
    Hi Jim,

It sounds like you were probably on Oahu and not the Big Island. The Pali is on Oahu and the rugged cliffs at Kaena Point on the norther point of Oahu make it impossible to drive completely around that island. Oahu is home to the big city of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Mahalo for stopping by and leaving a message!

Nicki, That is the nicest compliment that I have ever received! Mahalo nui loa for both the wonderful compliment and for taking the entire tour! Guess what? We are not done yet. I am working on another lens that leaves Kailua-Kona and takes the beach road (Queen Kaahumanu Hwy) to North Kohala and will show the viewer all the beaches (and what is good or bad about them) and some of the better hotels along the way.

Aloha! As a haole with hapa-haole kuz'ins and hapa-haole kiddos, I found your Hawaii lens to be awesome - lots of cool information and inspiration here! I grew up on a much smaller island about 5000 miles west of Hawaii (and about 1500 miles south of Japan, 1500 miles east of the Philippines, and 1500 miles north of Australia)--namely Guam. We passed through Hawaii every time we flew from Guam to the U.S. Mainland. I'm "favoriting" your lens as well as "lensrolling" it to my Hawaii lens. Please drop by and say "Aloha" to my lenses as well. Mahalo!

Thank you for writing this interesting lens. Sorry to hear that the Island is being "bought up" to the point that people of Hawaii are being forced to sell because of higher taxes. That is happening in many parts of Canada also, especially along the coastline. I live in a tourist area as well. I have written a lens on an eco-vacation. A very good thing as our gas prices zoom upward. Great lens. 5 stars, favorite, fan and lensrolled to my Staycation lens.

We truly do believe in the power of "Auntie Pele" as we so lovingly like to call her. Many that have removed the lava rocks from the volcano area have sent them back to the islands asking us to please put them back where they were found, which we do. Whether it is just the power of suggestion or not, we as island people believe in the aina being sacred and that it is a grave dishonor to remove even a pebble of the land without the blessings of a Kahuna. Greekgeek, mahalo nui loa for your visit and your very kind words.
  • Greekgeek Apr 2, 2008 @ 1:51 pm | delete
Yikes. I'm grieved to hear what development has done do Kona. I grew up at the edge of Amish country in Pennsylvania, and saw something similar happen. I remember when a local farmer got sued by an idiot neighbor from the city because he wouldn't "mow his lawn" and it was "lowering property value" -- the lawn in question was a crop of soy beans! And by the time I left, housing developments were eating up the farmland, including the one next to me which an Amish farmer tried to buy but couldn't afford. The newcomers to the area were passing laws outlawing raising pigs and cattle because they smell funny.

I fear when I came to Hawai'i I was another haole tourist, but... oh, I did not want to leave so much as a footprint behind. I remember being told it was bad to take even a pebble, because it all belonged to Pele, and maybe that was just a story the park rangers used to discourage souvenir-hunters, but I heeded it!

Back to your lens: LOVELY pictures, GREAT in-depth info, 5 stars!

Wow, this is such a great lens. I visited Hawaii, but never got over to the Big Island. Now I want to go back and see it!
