Just what is the problem with big media?

Oh let us count the ways...

1. No diversity -- We get the same coverage with no depth and this also makes the media a lot easier to control and manipulate

2. Too commercial -- It is all about audience demographics not the stories of the day

3. No checks or balance -- Whose interests are being served here? Sure in the old days publications were slanted but there were enough different voices sounding off that every position (or at least many) was heard and they worked to keep everyone honest

4. Who is feeding the beast? These media giants have created monstrous news machines that need to be fed so we are constantly seeing news created and spun and yet where is the substance beneath the fluff?

It's not just me that thinks big media is a problem...

Check out what Bill Moyers has to say about it

Very Much So

RickBasset says:

Nazi propaganda is the term that describes the psychologically powerful propaganda within Nazi Germany, much of which was centered around Jews, consistently alleged to be the source of Germany's economic problems. Nazi propaganda also expressed themes more common among the warring countries: the imminent defeat of their enemies, the need for security, etc. Doctored newsreel footage was also used to garner support for the Nazi cause.

Does any of this sound familiar?

LeslieBrenner says:

With the economy tanking, two never-ending wars, the possibility of a third [Iran], and everything else going on, what does the MSM talk about: flag pins. I'm fed up!

Techdog says:

Im pretty sure the governement makes sure we only hear what they want us to hear.

Not So Much

reasonablerobinson says:

Only in as far as the readership/audience lacks critical thinking capabilities. This might be down to lack of education or lack of interest in effortful thinking. If more people followed 60s girl Mandy Rice Davies and thought about what the media said with a sceptical 'well he would [say that] wouldn't he' big medias effects would be diluted. Basic education in semiotics and getting 'beyond the text' should be on every primary curriculum too.

hlruther says:

Nope, I can always turn off the tele and watch or listen to whatever I want on the internet without ads. Speaking of bad media, the news is on at my house currently and they are in, "hour 14 of the snow coverage." I'm not saying it's not pathetic!

Big Media, Big Trouble
Corporations do not like it when regulatory decisions are submitted to public scrutiny. That's because when the people enter the debate, it becomes a whole lot harder for businesses to advance their interests over that of the public interest.

That goes double for the big-media corporations that control so many radio and television stations, newspapers, cable systems and popular Internet sites. As CNN founder Ted Turner admits, "The media is too concentrated - too few people own too much."

In the current climate of consolidation, independent broadcasters simply don't survive for long.

"What Is Wrong With the Press?"
What is wrong with the press? What is wrong with the press is planted in the very question itself. What is wrong with Big Journalism is the fact that it even exists as an entity to be critiqued. In principle "the press" is not an entity but many diverse and contentious people publishing their opinions.
What is wrong with US media?
I think the real problem in our "democracy" is not the voting system, but the mainstream media. If people have no idea what is actually happening, then no voting system can fix it. As of a few months ago [this was written in May 2006], a very large proportion of voters still thought that WMD had been found in Iraq. And that there were real ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda.

What is media?

:"Popular press" redirects here; note that the University of Wisconsin Press publishes under the imprint "The Popular Press".

Mass media denotes a section of the media specifically designed to reach a very large audience such as the population of a nation state. The term was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines. However, some forms of mass media such as books and manuscripts had already been in use centuries. The term public media has a similar meaning: it is the sum of the public mass distributors of news and entertainment across media such as newspapers, television, radio, broadcasting, which may require union membership in some large markets such as Newspaper Guild, AFTRA, and text publishers.

Mass media includes Internet media (like blogs, message boards, podcasts, and video sharing) because individuals now have a means to exposure that is comparable in scale to that previously restricted to a select group of mass media producers. The communications audience has been viewed by some commentators as forming a mass society with special characteristics, notably atomization or lack of social connections, which render it especially susceptible to the influence of modern mass-media techniques such as advertising and propaganda. The term "MSM" or "mainstream media" has been widely used in the blogosphere in discussion of the mass media and media bias.

What is big media?

A media conglomerate describes companies that own large numbers of companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet.

As of 2008, The Walt Disney Company is the world's largest media conglomerate, with News Corporation, Viacom and Time Warner ranking second, third and fourth respectivelyhttp://www.viacom.com/investorrelations/Investor_Relations_Docs/Q407%20Web%20Deck%20FINAL.pdfhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisneyNews Corporation - Annual Report 2007.
