Just what is the problem with big media?
Oh let us count the ways...
1. No diversity -- We get the same coverage with no depth and this also makes the media a lot easier to control and manipulate
2. Too commercial -- It is all about audience demographics not the stories of the day
3. No checks or balance -- Whose interests are being served here? Sure in the old days publications were slanted but there were enough different voices sounding off that every position (or at least many) was heard and they worked to keep everyone honest
4. Who is feeding the beast? These media giants have created monstrous news machines that need to be fed so we are constantly seeing news created and spun and yet where is the substance beneath the fluff?
It's not just me that thinks big media is a problem...
Check out what Bill Moyers has to say about it

More about big media
- Big Media, Big Trouble
- Corporations do not like it when regulatory decisions are submitted to public scrutiny. That's because when the people enter the debate, it becomes a whole lot harder for businesses to advance their interests over that of the public interest.
That goes double for the big-media corporations that control so many radio and television stations, newspapers, cable systems and popular Internet sites. As CNN founder Ted Turner admits, "The media is too concentrated - too few people own too much." - "My Beef With Big Media" by Ted Turner
- In the current climate of consolidation, independent broadcasters simply don't survive for long.
- FRONTLINE: news war | PBS
- In a four-hour special, News War, FRONTLINE examines the political, cultural, legal, and economic forces challenging the news media today and how the press has reacted in turn. Through interviews with key figures in print, broadcast and electronic media over the past four decades -- and with unequal
- "What Is Wrong With the Press?"
- What is wrong with the press? What is wrong with the press is planted in the very question itself. What is wrong with Big Journalism is the fact that it even exists as an entity to be critiqued. In principle "the press" is not an entity but many diverse and contentious people publishing their opinions.
- What is wrong with US media?
- I think the real problem in our "democracy" is not the voting system, but the mainstream media. If people have no idea what is actually happening, then no voting system can fix it. As of a few months ago [this was written in May 2006], a very large proportion of voters still thought that WMD had been found in Iraq. And that there were real ties between Iraq and Al Qaeda.

What is media?
:"Popular press" redirects here; note that the University of Wisconsin Press publishes under the imprint "The Popular Press".
Mass media is a term used to denote a section of the media specifically envisioned and designed to reach a very large audience such as the population of a nation state. It was coined in the 1920s with the advent of nationwide radio networks, mass-circulation newspapers and magazines, although mass media (like books and manuscripts) were present centuries before the term became common.
The term public media has a similar meaning: it is the sum of the public mass distributors of news and entertainment across media such as newspapers, television, radio, broadcasting, which may require union membership in some large markets such as Newspaper Guild, AFTRA, & text publishers. The concept of mass media is complicated in some internet media as now individuals have a means of potential exposure on a scale comparable to what was previously restricted to select group of mass media producers. These internet media can include:
* television,
* personal web pages,
* message boards,
* podcasts,
* blogs and
* video hosting services.
The communications audience has been viewed by some commentators as forming a mass society with special characteristics, notably atomization or lack of social connections, which render it especially susceptible to the influence of modern mass-media techniques such as advertising and propaganda. The term "MSM" or "mainstream media" has been widely used in the blogosphere in discussion of the mass media and media bias.
What is big media?
A media conglomerate describes companies that own large numbers of companies in various mass media such as television, radio, publishing, movies, and the Internet.
As of 2007, News Corporation is the world's largest media conglomerate with Time Warner and The Walt Disney Company ranking second and thirdhttp://login.vnuemedia.com/hr/login/login_subscribe.jsp?id=8TmyLbuzoVM845YR4%2F5pPjGzy2Lw8ombPzuzXnEUX%2BTYhiBUr%2BAjtBw0g3nszyvFRx6Z8nyeNVJN%0Aud3FgMFrHRO0EzHySx0xZKnDIXIyBx1WH5X7X%2Bu7k%2BmeN0L37u3DKIys7L6U0gs7i69tSOHY5J6U%0AXxup164Zhfw2IvQMIBiZjrixgvN0wJ4hV07Tl9S%2FqW0IVW%2FPvhB3utrcc%2FV2vquE%2BwJUPGHm%2BXp2%0AGAyZoapZkTxWMZQDtJVkIabU7tmz1fdLK6o8M%2BT%2FDC87p9qUfKvc8CLc%2FUtYkDbBCEpLPNNXZvwW%0A0dJmbgJUVY%2FoGEFKn6dW%2BXq2ERKQ2RlonIxUpLYHPT7lcchpIUsd1hhK9gicaIqzNs8s8A%3D%3D.
Sony is also a media conglomerate (its revenue even surpasses News Corp.), but it involves in a diversity of other manufacture and businesses.

What Can Be Done?
After all these media conglomerates already exist so what can we do about it? Stop feeding the beast
* Support legislation to restrict market share and conglomerates
* Encourage and support local television and radio stations
* Protect internet media and communication
* Provide special mailing rates for local print publications

Big Media certainly controls what we hear and it's spin. There is also a "herd mentality", they all seem to pursue the same two or three stories. or celebrities. Posted August 04, 2008 |
